I live in a blue-collar, semi-rural area where the "foreign films" shelves are stocked with Jackie Chan movies...heh heh...trying to find some of the foreign recs here is well, pointless. However, I did run across a truly fascinating French film (I just bought a DVD player, so I'm renting everything I can just to experience the thrill of NOT rewinding:-). The title is "The City of Lost Children" and I'd highly recommend this for the sheer cinematography if nothing else. Insanely interesting characters (the little girl heroine is fabulous) in rich detailed settings that depict a civilization patchworked together like the war-mobiles in Mad Max films. I forgot to get the directors/producers names and I know the starring actor by face but will have to guess at his name - Ron Perlman???
Anyway, if you haven't seen this film, it's worth a look.
Follow Ups:
I love City of Lost Children - one of my favorites. Yeah, Ron Perlman is the guy's name. A passing resemblance to (an uglier) Tom Waits has been noted.
If you liked City, check out Delicatessen, the first film from the directors Junet and Caro. A simpler (but still unsual) storyline, and not quite as dark or developed as City, but a beautiful look to the film and really good (jolting) ideas. Some of the same actors appeared in Delicatessen - ie. the looney diver/scientist and his clones from City. My favorite scene from City? Don't know (too many to choose) but the flea-drugged killer plugging his own video feed into the thug's prosthetic eye and then showing himself being strangled would be close.I havn't seen Junet's latest; 'Amelie' yet. Junet also did one of the Alien series - think it was No. 4. Some of his troupe (including Pearlman) appeared in it.
Good viewing,

PS. Love Jackie Chan as well. Actually met him once while he was shooting a film in Melb. Drunken Msater 2 makes all other martial arts films look pale.
Charming as Amelie may be, once was enough.I saw Delicatessen when it won first prize at the Chicago Film festival years ago. It's a hoot. Wotta sense of humor, Junet and Caro. City of Lost Children wasn't as popular on the festival circuit, but it's a visually stunning film. A fine effort, and one to savor on DVD.
Junet did Alien Resurrection. I choose to mostly ignore this fact.
Scream ran Delicatessen recently and I found it to be immensely enjoyable and charming. My involvement was assured by the stunning opening credits and I will definitely look for City of Lost Children and Amelie when it's out. "This looks like a job for the Australian" had me rolling on the floor. After Delicatessen I ran Cronos, followed by Subway and Living Dead Girl, also from Scream. A very enjoyable night in.
There were indeed many. Right down to the ending when the little kid lets out a burp as the iris closes - on top of being funny on its own, it reveals the minds of the directors...I think they were having alot of fun with this movie. I'll see if I can find Delicatessan, thanks for rec.BTW - love Jackie Chan too!
While I was watching Amelie, I knew I'd seen the visual style before but I just couldn't place it until we were talking about the movie after. Dig it!
...and the people at the local rental have assured me they'll be getting it in...real soon now:-) Last time I checked they said it hadn't been released. Knowing there's a link between directors will make it all the more interesting.
.
Very underrated sci-fi fairytale. Rufus Sewell is yummy.
...but it's time to revisit it. It's been long enough for it to seem new:-)
