Was I ever surprised!Don't know where I got the impression, but I was expecting a B-budget horror flick (sometimes, I get in the mood for those). But instead, I got one of the best films I've seen in recent years...maybe ever! The film reminded me of Contact (another favorite) in its thought provoking premise! I absolutely loved the humor, especially the satirical humor! I also felt it genuinely frightened you, because IMO, there are people like Donnie all around us...in our streets, schools, work places. And, you never know when they may snap. The movie also had its moments of tenderness (I actually got teary-eyed in some spots). Great directing...great writing...great acting! Great cinematography. Great music...who can forget the music!!!
Where the hell was this movie during the oscars!? This stands head-n-shoulders above American Beauty, IMHO (as it's been compared against in some posts here).
Wow! Richard Kelly is a genius. I can't wait for his next fare.
Now, if only I can figure out whether the whole thing was an episode in Donnie's mind or whether the events actually took place? Either way would not make the film less worthy of praise.
I think my favorite scene had to be the discussion about the Smurfs.
Wonderful...just wonderful. Highly recommended.

Follow Ups:
I had the same reaction. When I first picked it up, I was thinking that it'd just be a time-filler and my general dis-like of Drew Barrymore just about assured me that it would be a waste. I remember half way thru thinking the exact same thing you did - "Wow!" - and even Drew seemed to be, well, likable....heh heh:-)Really a must see flick. Thanks for reminding me of it, I'd like to see it again.
I've also never been much of a fan of Ms. Barrymore (at least not her acting ;-)If there was one weak spot in the movie it was her scene where she's fired. Gosh...it seemed painful for her to deliver that scene...like she had to strain.
I guess when you're Executive Producer, you can do anything you want.

Loved it, but Donnie Darko was only in cinemas for a short time...one week in Indianapolis. Blink and it was gone. I hope film fans discover this fine film on DVD and VHS it deserves to be seen by a wider audience.Beautiful Mind? Phooey...not MY best film of the year, not by a longshot!
...so that I can watch the commentaries about the film and what the people behind the scenes were thinkin' or what their intent was.AS
