Did not see it for quite some time, borrowed a cassette from a friend yesterday. Great movie, probably the best Noiret performance I've seen. Romy is beautiful as always.
I wonder why they don't sell this movie in the US?
Follow Ups:
I don't think it is a particularly great movie, very entertaining of course, but cliche-driven to the hilt. Or should I say - to the breech. It is FAR from the best Noiret - he is simply a titan having some fun time there.
It is true he is great in every film he made, but things like "Coup de Torchon" are simply incredible, and while his role in the Old Gun is very much one-deminsional, he excells where roles call for depth.
He is one of my favorite actors, and even in the seemingly insignificant film like "Life and Nothing But" is is simply irresistable with his smile and eyes, his sense of humor.
But listen, the great man made almost 150 films... he IS a titan.
Romy Schneider, on the other hand, is not a deep actress, IMV. In this film she is not asked to do much, so she simply ads some interest, as the whole action (you can say that again!) concentrates on the lead man. Yes, she IS beautiful, and more - she is inoffensive... more than you can say about the typical Hollywood beauty.
Why isn't that film known in the US? Why other 50,000 or so films? To some degree this is supply and demand. Noiret is one of the most thinking actors, and that spells trouble here. Low demand...
once I stand with my wife at the entrance of the Ritz in Paris waiting for a taxi..there he was..Noiret..waiting , too..even better in real life than in movie world..what a presence !
He was a real pleasure ( discretely ) to look at.
Romy, was a good actress,in my eyes, but not an oustanding one,
with Piccoli, she made a famous cinema couple, famous in France...In Germany she was not very loved beside her Sissy roles.
Somehow I have never developed love affair with Michel Piccoli. Don't know why, but he is not drawing my attention like Noiret does, for instance, leaving me rather cold. One of his most recent ones: "Tout va bien, on s'en va" was boring I thought. And don't even mention the super-dud... the horrible indulging Rupture... I mean, how long watching naked Emmanuelle Béart can keep you there... we left.
I feel the same way.
Why..the old question of sympathy or not..I suppose...
