Better ask how does Stellan Skarsgård compare to Al Pacino?Stellan is a true actor, deep and full of hidden and open emotions, and most important - capable of playing them.
Al is the supreme and quintessential Holywood caricature, grotesque and plain silly. He confuses gesturing with acting, and his gestures are ridiculous.
He showed some promise in his early roles, but then it has all beed downhill.
I have not seen the remake, and frankly don't wanna see another Al's effort.

been reading about how he's such a star ...perhaps "Dog Day" was too much too early, but he's still playing that same role...I'm bored with it. Ok, he was good in "Godfather". Perhaps he retired after that role but didn't tell his agent.*************
Love the origional "Insomnia". I watched it 5 times in a period of a few weeks and enjoyed it more each time--. Those who suffer from insomnia get alot out of the mood of this masterpiece. Clearly, this director and this actor know the zombie world of the sleep-deprived.
i think alot of it is simply getting away from the USA worldview...it's so refreshing.
loved the humor...like the snow above the artic circle--so dry you darn't smile lest your face shatter and sublime to vapors.
but i can understand how hard it is for those who've never lived in a "foreign" country...the very idea that the world can be explained from an entirely alien perspective is quickly dismissed as incomprehensible by the vast majority of Americans.
will make an effort to see Robin Williams though.
loved him in "Popeye".
I won't argue with you about Pacino, but Skarsgård. The guy can be OK at times, but truly atrocious at others. Did you see Timecode? He was so melodramatic it made me laugh out loud.Doug
It was that "Who-Ha", "Scent of a Woman" film that did him in, I think. The saying is that "imitation is the sincerest form of flattery". But not in the acting game. On the other hand, who can do an imitation of Julia Roberts, Ben Afflect or Matt Damon, et al, and know who it is, right ? At least they have that going for them.Of his same class, Christopher Walken, is much better and harder to pin down and understand.
I have great respect for Chris, he is a deep actor. It is natural to hate him some of for his roles, but he is not a plywood cutout.
Did you see the original "Scent" with Vittorio Gassman?Papa Vittorio was a trully great man of the cinema. In that film he does some silly things, and given the nature of the subject you should expect some such stuff.
But man, at least there was none of that blind race horses@@t! The Italians usually know where to stop - except in their pants, which they cut two inches below the hill... I like that!
The original was far more enjoyable overall, even with the corny and silly things. The scenery helped too, I think.
Certainly none of that silly "Who-Haaa" stuff, I'm sure !
