OK. There may be some other strong contenders, but Christoper has my vote for his incredible, truly terrifying portrayal of Sean Penn's dad in "At Close Range." When he made "The Comfort of Strangers," I thought for sure we'd see him get some bigger roles. But, what the hell, Chris is great doing what he does.
Follow Ups:
was Keven Spacy doing Christopher Walken auditioning the role of Captian Kirk for the origional Star Trek...to die for...
yes, CW brings something thrilling to his roles...lots going on under the surface, usually covered with an artificial smile or simply a hanging stare that broadcasts a carefully controled emotional tempest that he might unleash violently at any moment. it's when he doesn't let go that he's at his most malevolently brilliant. I think that's why he's so good at humor...it's the unease of knowing it's opposite is just there...we are relieved and yet ever wary.
Check him out in "Suicide Kings" as the kidnapped mobster. I thought this was one of the real sleepers from a few years back.
My faves are Who Am I This Time?, King of New York, and The Dogs of War. Always has cool hair.

...have consistently been the best, funniest shows. I don't think I could laugh harder than when he plays "The Continental": sipping fine champay-ne!
