Just wondering what people here think of him as 007. No one comes close to Connery IMHO, and after seeing Brosnan in the role for the third time I'm still ambivalent about him. He brings some much needed physicality; in that I much prefer him over Roger Moore. My problem with him is that he seems more prissy than suave. He does seem assured in the role though, and that carries him a long way. I won't discuss "The World Is Not Enough" yet since it's just opened, other than to say that I have a few nitpicks with it but it's a pretty good Bond film, not one of my favorites but not bad.
I thought it was a bad movie. Denise Richards acting is horrible, the bad guys weren't nasty. With the ending when he kills him with the rod, I saw it coming the moment I saw the rod... I've seen commando. I almost fell asleep in the middle of it because I knew what was going to happen... they don't drop the hints very subtely (sp). The whole scene with the torture chair is ridiculously stupid and really unbelieveable just like the rest of the movie. I also take issues with the portrayal (as with all bond movies) of women and the way that Bond treats them as objects. Oh, did I mention that despite a few humorous and highly offensive one liners, I thought that the dialouge sucked?
I went to see wo films this weekend & found each of them equally disturbing. Only reason I went to see SH is I happen to live in the original Sleepy Hollow refered to in the film. Christopher Walken & his "Errrrrrrr" all of the time. Sheesh, great dialog.Bond also sucked equally. I happened to really like Tommorow Never Dies, but this dreck was dismal. Where was the evil? I saw no hint at destroying or taking over the world. But both leading ladies were rather nice eye candy. But not 2 hours nice.
Why do I continue to goto the theater? Just wait for it on DVD.
I think I've only watched 2 Bond movies since Connery left. One was the first Pierce Brosnan a few yrs. back. It was about as believeable as a Batman movie only far more boring and predictable. Yes, I believe I dozed off as well. Total crappola. Apparently nothing has changed.
Connery is my favorite too and I consider him the best Bond of the
lot, which included George Lazenby, Timothy Dalton, Roger Moore and
Pierce Bronson; excluding David Niven as the senior Bond in the 1967
spoof, "Casino Royale". - AH
Let me guess what this one is like (I haven't seen it yet): Bond performs an incredible stunt-filled escape from death; opening titles run with silhouettes with naked women while signature song is blared out by a popular artist (oh please don't let it be Britney Spear); megalomaniac launches plan to threaten the world; Bond gets called into service by M; Q shows him how to use deadly suppositories and other clever toys; Bond drives a bitchen' car to initial infiltration point; seduces and tricks throwaway love doll villain; meets and charms captive love doll heroine; gets captured by megalomaniac villain (who is somehow effeminate and strange so as not to undermine Bond's mojo) who proceeds to explain entire plan and weaknesses of his evil lair while not conclusively trying to kill Bond; Bond escapes in a wild vehicle chase; rescues captive heroine; stops evil plan; kills villain with irony; destroys evil lair; MI5 and CIA arrive too late to help Bond, while he helps himself to some hot lovin' on paid government time (just like some world leaders). And a guy named Broccoli nets $24 million in the first weekend.
the part where Bond gets captured before killing the villain and the villian has his henchmen set up a complex killing technique that Bond can defeat just in time to rescue the love interest/doll before killing the villain, etc. They all have to have that great suspense of wondering if Bond will die, you know!
Got to be at least one casino scene with Bond in a tux so that he can:
1. order a martini and deliver the classic line
2. interact with either the main villan or a sub-villan.
I haven't seen the movie but I would guess that it follows the same formula you described. Your synopsis of the Bond films is quite accurate. Well done!
Well, M is a little more involved in this one than the other Bond films. And R is introduced. Throwaway love doll villian seduces Bond for a change. Megalomaniac villian is suicidal and isn't as talky as usual. And it's Garbage not Brittney Spears.
I thought Britney Spear is garbage.;-)
Either that, or it was a lucky guess!! Yeh, sure!!!
Despite the hype on all the others,Connery's still easily the best Bond IMHO.
