It`s a single dual-layer disc with DTS 5.1 and DD 5.1 soundtracks; the various subtitles can be hidden and this is the full three hour version as seen in cinemas.A similar version is to be released in the UK in August for around £17.00 (Amazon), but I think the best bet will be to wait until November for the four disc set when the extra 30 minutes - edited to get the lower age rating in cinemas - will be included, along with DTS 6.1 and DD 6.1EX among other extras. Amazon will be putting these out for £22.75 (25% off full retail) which doesn`t seem too bad considering the extra couple of discs making 6 hours in total, and maybe the possibility that the DTS sound-track on this version is `full` DTS rather when the 2 disc set may be some compromised version (not sure of this at all but the four disc set description does appear to make special mention of the DTS quality).
Follow Ups:
Chris, FOTR was edited solely to shorten the running time to under 3 hours, not for any PG ratings considerations. There were some reports about extra gore in fight scenes, but according to Peter Jackson, it was misinformation. While it's true Jackson was required to deliver a US PG13, he's stated that they were so pressed to complete shooting and budgets were so tight, there was no way they were shooting anything that coudn't make it into the final cut. As a matter of fact, the British board has already rated the extended version - it's PG. I saw the item about an R rating in several mags that should've known better - one mag printed it and the rest picked up on it without verifying with New Line or Jackson. However, the other footage that will be incorporated into the extended version (complete with new music and new digital effects) make it a must have. The August 6 release will be 2 discs world wide with DD AND DD-EX. The info I've seen doesn't say anything about DTS - where did you pick up this info? We've been moaning on the Tolkien boards for months that FOTR won't offer DTS.
Thanks for the warning about the Malaysian DVD; luckily I`ve already decided to wait till November for the four disc set and haven`t even seen the film at the cinema to increase the anticipation :0)Here`s a link to the various versions of the DVD (and VHS Video) which I found at the UK Amazon site. I`d imagine that the distributors have provided this guide to the major UK retailers to enable pre-ordering, but I wouldn`t know if the US will be getting the exact same specs?
Let me know what you think.
Best Regards,
Chris Redmond.
