Watched the movie and some of the supplements last night. The transfer is an improvement over the previous version-I noticed it right away on the red uniforms (reds seemed "bloomy" on the old disc) and the fleshtones seemed more natural. Got a real kick out of Nicholas Meyer's noting that the question he is most often asked about ST2 is whether Ricardo Montalban's chest is for real or not! (for the record, he says it's all Ricardo). All in all, this is a no brainer purchase for Trek fans, and fans of entertaining SciFi in general-for many (including myself) it's the best of the films featuring the original cast.
Follow Ups:
I thought No 6 was the best of the old cast.
I have the LDs both extended & widescreen versions. Is it a widescreen extended version? I heard the original additional widescreen footage was lost which precluded the possibility of a copy?

We haven't viewed any of the supplements yet, but I've read that the Director's commentary pulls no punches and is very entertaining; your remarks seem to verify the pre-release reviews.
