Hasn't anyone seen 2001 on DVD? Can't anyone comment at all on it?
Follow Ups:
I have the $60 boxset and the image is lightyears better than the standard DVD its crazy. The color is vivid, contrast is amazing, its like every frame has been dashed in brilliant color. You have to see it to believe it.
Both use the same transfer. Check the link below for more information. You do get a CD with the boxed set, so it may be worth it from a sound standpoint (but I haven't heard it).
Your earlier question asked to compare the $60 boxed set with the plain jane $18 version, not to comment on the movie itself. Perhaps no one has the boxed set?I am not personally familiar with the $60 version, but IIRC it is the same movie transfer with added extra "collector" goodies, so your question has nothing to do with the quality of the movie/transfer.
Owning both the earlier non-anamorphic and current anamorphic transfers, the current one is definitely ahead in terms of quality. On the current version you lose the animated menus, and you may also lose the A.C. Clarke piece (I don't have it in front of me to check).
As to another point, if you want a good Also Sprach find a Telarc CD recording of it, such as on "Time Warp." In this case I think the movie soundtrack will disappoint compared to a purpose-recorded CD.
