OK, why don't I give this another try after so many years ...Has anyone seen the absolute top notch comedy series Chelmsford 123, set in Roman occupied Britain, that must have been broadcast in the UK in the mid/late 80s? I still fail to grasp why Channel 4 and Hat Trick (who own the rights), in an incredible display of ignorance and arrogance have blatantly refused to release this masterpiece (we are talking Fawlty Towers- league here folks) on video. Sadly, after a few years of ferocious battle for their right to view this, people seem to have resigned.
Still, perhaps someone has taped the series back then, or knows someone else who has? Would that someone do me a big-time favour and contact me? Any other ideas how to go about this?
Follow Ups:
Speaking of Romans... I used to love this one as a kid, believe it originally aired in UK around 70-71. [As Canadians living in England, we couldn't believe the stuff they showed on TV there.]
Still, visit this site:www.blackstar.co.uk
that's where I found the 6 episode sampler on vhs, anyway perhaps you can register for them to alert you about certain releases (they are really the kindest folk you can imagine)

I'll check them out. I don't have good VHS capability here anyway, besides the PAL problem. I wouldn't mind even if the DVD video quality wasn't that great, say as good as the Fawlty Towers transfers.
Aah yes! Have you seen "Further up Pompei" by the way, 20 years later and superb as well (eew, how common, I hear some of them say, yes indeed..., so bloody what, huh?), I've got that one on vhs, let me do a quick search for dvd and come back.
Not a brilliant idea; but try advertising in your local community newspaper; it's likely free to do so and some local video buff may have this taped. I had the same experience trying to get a copy of the brilliant UK series "Pennies from Heaven", (not the wretched Steve Martin film of the same name), the later "Singing Detective" series I could source anywhere; still have yet to source this more's the pity. I think it was underwritten by the Beeb, not the least interested in playing ball with offering a source or releasing a copy, but at least they did communicate.
I think you'll find that studios seem almost universally in contempt of fans of obsure releases; it's not just a UK phenomenon.
