Here's a story, courtesy of medialine.com..."Blockbuster Offers Discounted 'Buy' Option on DVD Rentals
(Sept. 5, 2002) Dallas, TX -- Blockbuster Inc. is launching a new program that enables its members to buy at a "deep discount" DVD titles that they rent from any of its 4,300-plus outlets nationwide.
Customers who rent a selected new DVD release, and return it within the appropriate rental period, will have the opportunity to purchase a previously viewed copy of that DVD title at a discount. Customers can take advantage of this discount, in some cases up to 60 percent off the original retail price, when previously viewed copies of that title become available for sale and while supplies last.
Customers interested in renting a so-called "Rent it! Like it! Buy it!" title must do so within its first four weeks of release in order to qualify for the program."

The last thing I would do is buy a previously viewed DVD, some maniac has probably played street hockey with !Why don't they just give 'em away...because that's the only way I will buy one !
Follow Ups:
Yes I have bought used DVD's for $7.99-$9.99 (they often run $2 off any DVD sales on weekends, hence you get the $9.99 for $7.99), you can always return them if they are damaged etc. You don't have to previously rent them, however, at least not at my local Blockbusters. I find it a good way to buy movies, at least popular ones that I care to own. More obscure titles I still have to order for full price.
Hi,
I buy it, rip off the shrinkwrap, and check the condition right there in front of the clerk. I once went through 3 or 4, and the clerk went to the shelves, and got a relatively new one off the rack. Got rid of me, tho :) Seriously, if you're willing to do that, it can be ok. My complaint is that the used price went up, so the heck with it.

just the security seals. I thought it was unusual, but it was the same for those releases in a few places. Quite annoying having those stupid unremovable promo stickers all over the package.
It's common practice here in NZ for shops to remove the shrinkwrap and take discs out of the plastic case for "security" reasons.Damn retailers are back in the dark ages here.
novelty shops. It must really cut down on theft.mp
Michael w, How do you know that you're getting an unplayed, new disc ?
The whole thing sounds unsavory and something about the wording bugged me. Then I realized it's just a membership drive.I'm not a member of Blockbuster and don't plan to be. The smell of their carpeting gives me a serious headache.
