Anyone have a favorite movie or movies dealing with cars, cross-country type races, or hot-rods ect? After seeing one lately I am amazed with the stunts... and how well them old cars held up. What is the oldest one out there? Any silent moies? Any classics?
Follow Ups:
--Ahh those Citroen Big 15's at full tilt!Remininscing,
With the basic plot premise of "nothing left to lose", one of the characters takes up auto racing. It has some amazing stunt car crashes, and is a great film to boot. Also check out Maniacs on Wheels--if you can find a video copy. It starred two-time World Champion Graham Hill as himself.
but this was in the mid '70s I believe.
And a real dog...almost as bad as "Grand Prix"!
to each their own, I guess.
Nice cars, too.

DUEL was a darn good movie, especially for a 6 year old!

Also... the movie I saw recently was a -MAd MAd.... world!
Wonderful 1960s romantic fluff, as only the French can do it. Can't remember the male lead. Female lead was Anouk Aimee (with apologies for the spelling).Great film for non-French speakers. Very little dialogue; lots of music. An upbeat "Elvira Madigan" (although "EM"'s music was tops: Mozart).
"Vanishing Point" late sixties? If so, it gets my vote for pulse-pounding race scenes. It even conquers the performance of Barry Newman...(wasn't that the forgetable guy's name?)
it gets my vote. "Speed" kills incarnate. Yes, it was Barry Newman. Love that Cuda!
;^)
"The Killers", directed by Don Seigel.Taut, film noir with an all star cast.
Lee Marvin, Clu Gulagar, Angie Dickinson, John Cassavetes, Ronald Reagan. It doesn't get much better than this.
Best '60's era car movie: "Death Race 2000" (Winner of the coveted Cannes "Velveta" Award). Warning: contains gratutious nudity (good!) unfortunately featuring Sylvester Stallone (bad!)Honorable Mention, Best '50's era car movie: "Hot Rods From Hell"
Honorable Mention, Best '70's era car movie: "The Gumball Rally"

Far superior an entertainment to any of the movies that try to represent a real car race scenario, or than most *real* car races for that matter (when you're there).

Another great film is The Last Run with George C Scott, 1971.
If you are a formula one fan this is about the only good race movie ever made on the topic. The pre CGI special effects created by mounting camreas directly on modified race cars manned by some of the great drivers of the day yielded a sense of excitement and reality none of the special effect extravaganzas of today even hint at ...
Of this era and genre, the three that come to my mind are Grand Prix, Le Mans, and Winning. I have all three on LD, and IMHO, Grand Prix is easily the best. Your comments on the mounting of the cameras provide a good insight into why this film is so involving and exciting.
actually relate to Le Mans (which was made at Daytona, by the way) better. Most fans who never raced or never got above formula V (back in the day) prefer Grand Prix, as you do. Of course, those of us who like Le Mans still wish he had left out the goofy love story, but never mind.Perhaps the difference makes a bit of sense, as McQueen was the only accomplished (and successful) Grand Prix driver amongst the stars. Whilst filming Le Mans, he actually placed 2nd at the Daytona 24 hrs . . . with a foot in a cast.
IIRC McQueen drove sports cars not Grand Prix/ Formula 1 open wheelers.
Not exactly what you asked for, but check out "Thunder Road".drobo
Moon shine and hot rod Fords!
I'm sure he had a few tokes before cruising. Hehehe.

just misses out on the era being early 70's. Best car chase/race sequences ever filmed IMHO, and a "sleeper" of a film
