Recently watched this film on video, released I think in 1993 or so. Featuring Robert Duvall and Faye Dunaway; film based on Margaret Atwood
novel about selected women forced to bear children in God's Name in a future mythic country.
I fell asleep watching this dull flick; woke up midway and changed films
to Bruce Lee's "Return Of The Dragon" and enjoyed the climatic battle at
the Roman Coliseum between Bruce and Chuck Norris as "Colt" - the finest
martial arts duel ever filmed, IMO. Of course, Bruce did all the choreography. The fight scenes featuring Bruce are all excellent, especially when he faces multiple thugs alone, armed with a pair of
nunchucks; acting and plot hokey, but if you're a Lee fan, a must see;
the later and much bigger budgeted, "Enter The Dragon" is excellent, the
best overall film of Lee.
Leonard Maltin gave "The Handmaids Tale" a 2&1/2 rating out of 4 *'s;
I don't think I'd have rated it even that high. He said that the film
was "interesting, but best described as sterile". I didn't even find it
interesting. - AH
I had to read this book for one of my required "Women in Literature"-type classes. A real women's lib. book that had a fairly interesting setup, but fell flat after that. The book was readable, but barely. After finishing the book, I rented the movie, but I fell asleep about one-thrid of the way through. Even the Species girl couldn't save it! I guess I didn't miss much! Good luck!
I'm reading Margaret Rosenthal's The Honest Courtesan, her thesis on Venetian courtesans was the basis for the movie "Dangerous Beauty". And I am not in college and have never taken a women's studies course. Boy does my girlfriend have me whipped!
I've seen Dangerous Beauty. Gorgeous film to look at and actually pretty interesting. Have you seen it and is it faithful to the book?
Yeah, I saw the movie first on DVD and they have an interview with the author as an extra feature, so I thought the book would be a decent read. It is academic and dry compared to the melodrama of the film and I doubt that Veronica Franco's day in court was as compellingly triumphant in the film. But the book gives a lot of insight into the politics of the time and really comes down on Oliver Platt's character very hard (a whore for the Church). Still, Franco was one hell of a writer and a fascinating woman. Contrast that to Monica Lewinsky's autobiography (about half a paragraph is probably enough). I was told by my nephew's girlfriend that they showed the movie in her Women's Studies class at Berkeley.Oh God, I'm turning into Phil Donahue. Testosterone, please?
You forgot to note that the star of the film is Natasha Richardson, Sir Ralph's daughter. If you're Pro-Choice, this is probably your "Citizen Kane".Have you seen "Fist of Legend", the mid-90's remake of "Chinese Connection" with Jet Li? Outstanding fight sequences, and a better story than the original.

Knew her mother was also a famous actress, but couldn't come up with the name.
hi,
it got good reviews, but it was pure mediocrity, start to finish.
