Of this era and genre, the three that come to my mind are Grand Prix, Le Mans, and Winning. I have all three on LD, and IMHO, Grand Prix is easily the best. Your comments on the mounting of the cameras provide a good insight into why this film is so involving and exciting.
actually relate to Le Mans (which was made at Daytona, by the way) better. Most fans who never raced or never got above formula V (back in the day) prefer Grand Prix, as you do. Of course, those of us who like Le Mans still wish he had left out the goofy love story, but never mind.Perhaps the difference makes a bit of sense, as McQueen was the only accomplished (and successful) Grand Prix driver amongst the stars. Whilst filming Le Mans, he actually placed 2nd at the Daytona 24 hrs . . . with a foot in a cast.
IIRC McQueen drove sports cars not Grand Prix/ Formula 1 open wheelers.
