Recently watched "The Blackboard Jungle" (1955) and "To Sir With Love"
(1967) on video. Both feature high school teachers having to manage
unruly students; Glenn Ford is the teach in "TBJ" and Sidney Poitier is
the teach in "TSWL" (Poitier is a troubled student in "TBJ", BTW).
Both good films, although I liked "TBJ" somewhat better; "TSWL" was
decidedly tame compared to "TBJ". - AH
If you saw an Asian juvenile delinquent in the back of the classroom in "Blackboard Jungle", you saw my uncle, Yoshiyuki Tomita. He said that the casting director told him to try to act "Puerto Rican". Yeah, he had me convinced (as I hum "America" from West Side Story). Yosh was a delinquent well into his forties and taught me how to make all sorts of explosives and projectile launchers. He used to throw firecrackers at everyone's feet during his annual 4th of July pyrofests in Long Beach, and shot a few bottle rockets up women's dresses. Ironic that his son became a doctor. Interested FBI agents can reach him at the following addr...auck!
