For you animation fans - my list of top ten 'toons currently running:1. SpongeBob Squarepants - Surely the most insidious 'toon of all time... how this one got below Nickolodeon's radar as a kid's show is beyond me. There is a HUGE gay subtext running thoughout almost every episode along with mixed sexual innuendo and some pretty outrageous bathroom humor (ever notice how Mr. Krabs is always sitting on the toilet during an emergency?). Hilarious characters (Plankton is my personal fave), great music and gorgeous background art. The "Nautical Nonsense" DVD is a must-own for Bikini Bottom fans (skip the Halloween DVD, it's average at best).
2. Aqua Teen Hunger Force - What can you say about a team of fast-food superheros living in the New Jersey 'burbs? Funky and essential viewing. Personal fave: The Mooninites ("We will spank you with our moon rocks!).
3. Courage the Cowardly Dog - Off the wall storylines and the best backround art of any 'toon. Fantastic music. Personal fave: The Goose God. Please bring these out on DVD!
4. Harvey Birdman, Attorney at Law - Unbelievable homage to all those crappy Hanna-Barbera cartoons of the sixties and early seventies. Personal fave: The Banyon Custody Case. ("What's your first name, last name and occupation?" "Frogman, frogman and frogman.").
5. Powerpuff Girls - I fell in love with Blossom, Bubbles and Buttercup the instant they opened a can of whup-ass on the villans of Townsville. Background art is an incredible tribute to early Hanna-Barbara animation and illustrates just how far this minimalist outline style was ahead of its time. Some great tributes to Marvel characters (Mojo Jojo is based on "The Leader" from the Hulk; nice episode with a Galactus character too). Personal fave: the award-winning "Dy-Na-Mo" battle with the giant Fish-Balloon.
6. Beavis and Butthead - Gone but not forgotten (sorry, just had to include this one). Wickedly funny, especially the video sections.
7. Simpsons - 'Nuff said.
8. Futurama - Funnier and even more creative than the Simpsons IMO, and sadly underappreciated. The Robot City episode was an instant classic.
9. SeaLab 2020 - Best taken in small doses. Can be a bit pedantic at times, but when the storylines work they are laugh-out-loud funny.
10. South Park - Just keeps getting better and better. The current story line with Butters as the evil genius out to conquer the world is hilarious. Favorite character: TIMMY!!!
Honorable Mention - This one is a puppet show, not animation, but I'm including it here because I loved it so much - the six-episode homage to Gerry Anderson's "Thunderbird", MTVs "Super Adventure Team." This one came and went quickly back in 2000 and I'm kicking myself because I never taped it and haven't been able to find copies anywhere. If you haven't seen it and are a fan of Thunderbirds you'll never know what you missed - including the episode where the SAP met "Washing Machine Man... but you can call me Crazy Barry." If anyone knows where to find this on video please let me know!
Follow Ups:
1. When Sandy is trying to convince the gang that land creatures can do anything better than sea creatures. She begins listing off what she can do better, and Squidward adds, "Don't forget the drowning".2. SpongeBob is being dragged through torture devices like a cheese grater, etc. and one of them is also "educational television"! :)
Gay subtext? Perhaps. There have been moments where I raised an eyebrow to wonder what the hell that was all about. Eyebrow raising moment: SpongeBob and Patrick mad at each other. They are all beefed up (ala bodybuilder like) and wrestling in a wrestling ring, when they both rip each other's pants off to discover that one is wearing the other's underwear. They walk off into the sunset arm in arm. Things that make you go Hmmmm?
I also agree that Courage The Cowardly Dog is great. If I'm not mistaken, I think there's a link between Courage and SpongeBob (can't remember who...not Dilworth...but someone). My favorite Courage episode? Courage and Bigfoot when they take a quick 30 second break from a food fight... each don headress and skirt made of tropical fruit... turn to the camera... spotlight comes on...they do a quick dance number to Caribbean rhythms... and just as quickly they go back to throwing food at each other. Too funny!
But seriously, folks........NO ONE - REPEAT - NO ONE has beaten the craziness of the classic Tex Avery Cartoons, the golden age of Chuck Jones at Warner Brothers, and the early Betty Boop and Popeye cartoons of Max Fleischer. Most of the TV cartoons of the 50s and 60s are crap but there were a few shining moments - almost all provided by Jay Ward of Bullwinkle fame. One of the good things about current cartoons is that the best are really attempting to be different and original, while paying homage to the great cartoons of old.
and from my distant past,
Rocky and Bullwinkle
Underdog
and what was that one with Sherman and Mr. Peabody (a dog) with a time travelling machine called the 'Wayback'?

It is only with the heart that one can see rightly. What is essential is invisible to the eye. - Antoine De Saint-Exupery
He was always telling his underling get in the "Falcon" Car--go get the Falcon this or that--priceless.
We used that word instead of the "F" word for years.
"Don't be a Falcon idiot!"

ah, much better than the F word that I've been using; since Dr. Evil made it a household word (yech!) I begin to worry.Reminds me of a National Lampoon article from many decades ago; they said that using 'frigging' or 'shoot' or 'heck' was just as damning in the eyes of God as 'f***', 'sh*t', etc. and everyone is going to h-e-double toothpicks because of it.
For that matter, f*** is probably bad too.

F***! (I feel it should always be capitalized) is a classic. Right up there Oh F***!We are a refined group!

Family Guy
The Critic
The Angry Beavers
And I also think The Critic should be on that list too.
I give your list a nine out of ten, my highest rating.

LOVE Spongebob. It's demented, layered, intelligent and hysterically funny. It obviously works on several levels, like some cartoons I watched as a kid that I see VERY differently now. I see the sexual innuendo, bathroom humor, and parody of life in general, but a gay subtext? That one eludes me.
Whenever I bring up the topic of a gay text on SpongeBob (usually at cocktail parties, parole meetings and sewing bees) there is usually a 50/50 split on those who get it and those who don't... no further comment.
But, I don't get it. I never thought "gay" when I see it.
But who cares, we all take something different from this cartoon. I'm a crazy fan, love this show. And it took some time to grow on me.
But not that crappy live-action version. SPOON!!!
Just a smattering of brilliant writing from this show that's stuck in my head.
Please GOD let these come out on DVD!

Tick: Ahem… Thorax-in-a-box.
Thrakazog: Thrakazog!
Tick: Ah, yes. Laxative-bog.
Thrakazog: No! No!
Tick: Um. Laplander-zog.
Thrakazog: No!
Tick: Four-yaks-and-a-dog?
Thrakazog: Thrak--
Tick: Sapsucker-frog.
Thrakazog: No! No! No!
Tick: Susan?
Thrakazog: Now you’re doing it on purpose. How juvenile.
in the past 4 years! :-)I would add to your list:
Ren and Stimpy - Sure, they're gross (my wife can't stand them). But they made cartoons "outrageous" again. The earlier ones by John K. were superior, but the later ones are worthwhile, too.
Fairly Oddparents - Wacky and witty. Cosmo is one of the funniest idiots around.
Space Ghost - It's amazing the stars they get to guest on this show.
I gave at the office!
