these are films guaranteed not to increase your brain cells. they are just action films. i want to review them before i forget them since they are a bit nondescript. what they do is provide an adreniline rush for mostr of the 90 minutes. i think our nervous systemsw can take a fair number of them without worry.in 'enough', the husband abruptly turns into a madman, or serious jerk, after about 4-5 years into the marriage. his ways control things for most of the movie, but then it has a hollywood ending.
i'm quickly forgetting what 'scorpion king' was about, but there's really alot of action scenes, the most action i've seen since collateral damage.
i think 'panic room' was the most interesting of the 3. bad guys should know not to mess around with a mother. why does everyone know that but the bad guys?
we know that about bears but we don't seem to know that about humans.
actually that's the same theme of both 'panic room' and 'enough'. there is a new genre called femalexploitation films.
i don't care who you are. if there is a woman and her child in the movie, you better run.
Follow Ups:
When I saw JLo (or was it Mariah Carey - they all look the same to me) donning the gloves, I put it back on the shelf. Badass women just don't do a thing for me:-)
And it was a great fight scene, albeit completely one sided.Rent it and jump to this scene.....it's worth it.
I don't know Rob, I really have had enough of this month's losers...it all started with Frailty:-)OTOH, I had a good laugh with the Tim Allen comedy released this week - two days after I see it, I've forgotten the title which probably tells you something. It had its moments.
so the righteous violence is justified.Enough is not an awful film. You really do feel the fear and frustration on the part of the fleeing mother. I actually think Ms. Lopez is a decent actress...better than some of the other mega-stars frankly. The end is really worthwhile. IMO, they should have kept the hand to hand combat thing a secret when they promoted the film.
I mean of course we expect him to get it in the end, but it traditonally has been the rescuing male with a gun, or the accidental turning into the knife or some such. This one was deliberate, planned, mono e mono, pugilistic revenge. That is a first as far as I know and it worked well, I thought. JLo is pysically beefy enough to make you believe she can do it, and she does it with a good dose of attitude to boot. I think you will enjoy it.
Girl Power Films. The first good one I remember is Extremities with Farah Faucett.Female exploitation implies the female in the picture is being exploited--but we know the ones being exploited is the audience:o)
No seriously--I see the films you describe to be more female empowering---and I see Female exploitation films to be more gratuitous to only the male population, for example the twisted all girl prison movies (with male guards). You would never call an Arnold S. film male exploitation (even with the bulging oily muscles).

Women are often told to cower and submit in the face of assault (my favorite is telling women to deliberately soil themselves so as to repulse the attacker…has this ever worked?). Women have every moral right to defend themselves with force, just as much as any man. I say bravo to these films for showing that.BTW, I was just tickled watching J-Lo taunt her husband with those face slaps....Very male ego deflating.
Rob
degrade males to uplift the female gender. It just feels good sometimes! HIIIIIIYA (said Blossom, Bubbles and Buttercup). And of course I'm just kidding--I never beat on my KP (even if he deserves it!)

i heard the term 'blackexploitation' films, and i never knew the meaning why, but i assumed incorrectly perhaps, that it intended to manipulate feelings, to give a sense of empowerment, or whatever.so that's the only reason i picked that term.
but then you are perfectly right that so many of these hollywood films are really all about that. in these films we win over bad guys, we win over the corrupot gov't, we win over everybody through the hero. i remember it said that the sylvestor stallone movie where he wins in vietnam was purposely done to exploit that situation.
so i guess the whole society, both male and females are impotent, and feel powerless, and these movies provide us with a fix. and i appreciate you mentioning it.
and i sure did enjoy that woman giving it to her husband, so that kind of anger when someone transgresses all boundaries of fairness, is not sex specific to the sex of the victim.
it is a little ridiculous though that all these types of situations have to end in violence and revenge. 'enough' was a hollywood ending, but also a forgone plot and conclusion. imagine a real story line. imagine after she told her mother-in-law how she got the bruise on her face, and the mother-in-law stating that 'what did you do to deserve that!', that that is where a real life drama began.
thanks for the 'lantana' recommendation. i will check to see if the local stores have it.
check out The Burning Bed with Farah Faucett. OUCH!For Years, when my mom would have a "tiff" with my dad, she would say "that's OK honey, you just go on to bed--wink wink" They were weird like that--married 35 years--and then got divorced in their mid fifties--go figure.
so they married when they were 15?
Randy

OK Dr Darkstar---I'm a teacher, so I will take the liberty---
55 minus 35 is 20, and that's when they were married give or take a year!:o)
You must be having a blah day--but I will tell you, you had me really worried for a second---for a SECOND!mp
probably the dad didn't fully realize the value of the mom, i don't know. you're never too old to make a mistake.have you seen the fairly recent movie, 'happiness'? that's an intersting film. i don't know if anyone is happy in it. two of the characters are the mom and the dad, i guess in their fifties. quite interesting characters especially the dad.
but soooo hard to watch. Has any film handled a tougher subject so unflinchingly, with no easy answers? And so many unforgettable characters: the chubby guy slobbering over the icy neighbor babe; the psycho fatty; the daffy sister; the lecherous dad, etc. I think one of the best films I've seen in years.
but Mrs. "Piggy" says "fatty" is unkind. You should use the term "weight challenged" Ha ha--you think that's funny---mark my words---that will be the new PC term (the way things are going). But seriously:
It is DEFINATELY the darkest comedy I have ever seen. The way the "perfect wife" deals with her sister (the less than perfect one who falls in the clutches of that strange Russian immigrant) is so quietly horrendous! And the fear of death in the parents is palpable.mp
I posted, just a wee bit ago, about that very title and gave a brief description. It is with the best movie titles post...check it out and see if I'm on the money?mp
it had to be the mom-dad issue that caused the synchronicity.after you wrote in this thread, you went right on to mention the title in the other thread. and after i read your post in this thread, that movie came to mind.
i agree, it was a very good film. a touch raw in it's exposure but very well done.
Can you honestly say you did not love seeing Ms. Lopez's character kick the shit out of her husband? Ya knew it was going to happen (cause they gave it away in the trailers), but it was still viscerally very satisfying watching the bully get trashed by his victim. Made sitting through the rest of the flck worthwile.
Lantana is the latest very good film I have rented. I won't anylyse this film, I never do that. All I could say after watching a film, if it's good or not, and Lantana deserve to be watch. Geoffrey Rush (Elisabeth, Quills, Shine) star in this film.if you like good drama with interesting characters, this is for you. If you like only Star War, MIB, Jurassic Park, forget it.
