This morning I watched a DVD of "Buena Vista Social Club", the Wim Wenders' documentary on the Cuban musicians heard on the famous CD produced by Ry Cooder. The emotional content is high because these are musicians sincerely relating their life stories and performing from their hearts. Highly recommended. This afternoon, saw "The Straight Story". Here's something I thought I'd never read in one sentence: David Lynch, G-rated film, and Disney Studios. Based on the true story of an Iowa farmer who traveled 370 miles to Wisconsin to visit his brother and reconcile their bitter relationship, Richard Farnsworth gives an Oscar-caliber performance as the determined traveler. No CGIs, no loud surround sound, no special effects; just good direction, a good story, great acting, and beautiful cinematography (reminds me of Caleb Deschanel's work). Again, highly recommended.
...the farmer in "The Straight Story", hobbled by failing vision and painful hip degeneration, made the journey to see his brother by driving his small riding lawnmower.
