Anyone have any 1950s video tapes of wrestler The French Angel?
Also George "The Animal" Steele of the 1960s? I have a tape of
Dick The Bruiser, his cousin The Crusher, Haystacks Calhoun, The
Kangaroos, Killer Kowalski, Gorgeous George, Fritz Von Erich, Yukon
Eric, Lou Albano, Freddie Blassie, Buddy Rogers, Johnny Valentine,
Antonio Rocca, Dr. Jerry Graham, Eddie Graham and others. - AH
Follow Ups:
Bruno Sammartino, anyone?
heavyweight champ at Madison Square Garden circa 1960/61? - AH
.
Bruno defeated WWWF Champ Buddy Rogers(Herman Rohde) at Madison Square Garden
in late 1963 with his "backbreaker" finishing hold. I have seen
a clip of this on TV. Rogers patterned himself after "Gorgeous
George" Wagner. Rogers bleached blonde his hair, tanned his body,
assumed bad-guy role, strutted arrogantly to incense crowd and used
the "figure-four leglock" to put away opponents. Rogers called himself
"Nature Boy". Of course, Ric Flair came along with same persona later
in the 60s, ditto for Buddy Landell later. Rogers had been the
NWA champ before WWWF, but was defeated by Lou Thesz in early 1963.
Rogers, later a manager, had a showdown with Flair in 1979, the two
Nature Boys, and lost. Supposed to fight Landell in 1992, but suffered
a massive stroke and died. Saw Thesz, something of a legend, in
Atlanta in early 70s, defeated opponent with a rollup, very "scientific", but loved to use elbow smashes to soften up opponent! Also, during same event in Battle Royale, Haystacks Calhoun
and Cowboy Bill Watts were last two wrestlers left in ring, Haystacks
had Watts against ropes trying to push him out, but Watts grabbed him
by back of neck and BOTH went over ropes, no winner! During event
famed wrestler/promoter, Ray Gunkel took a series of blows to the
chest by Ox Baker and later complained of chest pains, dying of
heart failure at hospital. Steve, as a former avid wrestling fan -
yes my IQ improved over the years! - I've seen wrestling (mostly TV)
in virtually part of the USA as I've lived all over. Memorable
wrestlers in Northeast and Midwest include such notables as Bruno,
Verne Gagne, Kowalski, Valentine Brothers, Dick The Bruiser and The
Crusher, Bobo Brazil, Bulldog Brower, Joe Scarpa, Wilbur Snyder,
Mark Lewin, Lumberjack Joe DeLuc, The Sheik, George "The Animal
Steele", many others including Eduard Carpentier and Rocca, both
of whom looked like trapeze artists sometimes. Jimmy "Superfly"
Snuka followed their mold. Nick Bockwinkle and Ray Stevens prominent
in AWA Midwest and NWA Pacific Northwest, Flying Mil Mascaras big
in southern Calif. Rowdy Roddy Piper first appeared there. The
Von Eric family and the Funks, Dory Sr.and Jr.plus Terry big in
Texas, and don't forget the strange "Missing Link"! The Deep South
had Tim Woods(later Mr.Wrestling)from Michigan, Mr Wrestling No 2,
(formerly Johnny "Rubberman" Walker), Chief Little Eagle, El Mongol,
The Anderson Brothers, Ole, Gene and Lars, The Graham Brothers out of
Tampa, also from Texas/Oklahoma were "The American Dream" Dusty
Rhodes and Dirty Dick Murdock, formerly the tag-team The Outlaws.
Former pro footballers, Cowboy Bill Watts and Big Cat Ernie Ladd
came from OK and TX respectively. Don't forget Dick "Mr.Excitement"
Slater from Tampa! The King, Jerry Lawler from TN. And Big 350lb
ChooChoo Lynn from Macon, GA. Finally, must pay homage to the
giants of wrestling back then, Andre The Giant from France, Man
Mountain Mike, Haystacks Calhoun, Man Mountain Dean and the McGuire
Twins. Incidentally, my fave tag-team was The Masked Assassins
in the 1970s, then as they faded, came the mightly team from the
streets of Chicago, The Road Warriors! And you know the rest of
the story....Hulk Hogan (formerly Silver Sterling), et al. P.S. -
I will confide that it is indeed strange to go to a live wrestling
event while under the influence of LSD-25, a powerful hallucinogen!
