If we're talking about *influential* sci-fi films, influential in the historical sense, the original Metropolis has to be #1. It's one of the wellsprings of speculative visual design.
It's been thematically significant, sure. But visually Metropolis has had an incredible influence on the look of scifi and fantasy films for over 75 years. People have been influenced by Metropolis' art direction at second and third hand, heck - I bet some pups didn't even realize it was Metroplis they were referencing.
Look at a picture of Maria the robot. Now look at a picture of C-3PO.
IMO Metropolis has passed from "influential" to iconographic.

While the original version has long been lost and the cuts that remain make for a fairly disjointed (maybe even silly) story, every science fiction film made since 1926 owes something to Fritz Langs Metropolis, it would have to the #1 most singularly influential Science Fiction film ever and would've been a real eye opener for 1920's audiences too don'tcha think?
