"Forbidden Planet"-1956, followed closely by "The Thing(From Another
World)-1951, then "Island of Lost Souls"-1933. I have posted
reviews of the first two on this forum: FP review posted in archives
September 20, 1999 and TTFAW review posted October 4,1999; you'll
probably have to access them manually instead of search engine,
hope you find them interesting. They are also at www.imdb posted
by myself as Walt Whizzer, also have a FP nostalgia piece there
too. What is your favorite? (much easier than claiming most influential, don't
you think?) - AH
Follow Ups:
Can't pick just one...and since I haven't participated in any other sci-fi lists, doesn't that mean I get to mention more???
In no particular order:Brazil
Dark City
Blade Runner (Director's Cut)
Metropolis
Forbidden Planet
The Day the Earth Stood Still
2001, A Space Odyssey
A Boy and His Dog
Altered States
Solaris (Tarkovsky)
Pi
City of Lost Children
Quatermas & The Pit
La Jetee
Farneheit 451
THX 1138
Star Wars Episode IV
Abre Los Ojos
Clockwork Orange
Back To The Future (Is this really scifi???)
Dune (Yes, I know, I know, flaws 'n all...Harmonia gets ready to duck)
Invasion of the Body Snatchers (both versions)
Silent Running
StarmanYou will observe Mr. Spielberg's efforts are noticably absent from the above list. I enjoy approximately 7/8 of Close Encounters, and bits of A.I, bits and pieces of Minority Report. I find the endings of all the above curiously unsatisfying...cloying even. (Moreover, I must be the only person in America who doesn't thrill to ET. While Spielberg is undeniably talented, I just cannot find it in me to love much of his oevre.
Call me strange, but I'd rather watch The Hidden, or It Came From Outer Space, than ET. I'd rather watch Dune than Minority Report.
So it goes.
AH, I don't know if you noticed, but this has got to be the 276th thread on Sci-Fi films. It also seems that you originated about 75% of them. Not that I am calling for the sci-fi post moratorium, just to make you aware.
Even AuPh seems to be tired of jumping in anymore. We have massaged the same ten "best ever" sci-fi films so much by now, they are now like a bar of soap that has seen been used by a sweaty football team twenty times.
in spite of scrubbing, and scrubbing and.... Will lay of the
sci-fi lists and limit myself to discussion of individual films,
also will get around to watching Solaris and let you know what
I think. Just hope it isn't the cinematic equivalent of Martin
Heidegger's "Being and Time"! - AH
He-he... I hope it doesn't turn out like First Prize - Watching Solaris... Second Prize - Watching Solaris two times.
BTW - have you seen Pi? We talked about it here, but I don't recall if you had seen it.
Havenīt seen Pi, but will make a point..... of seeing it, have seen it
mentioned on this site a while back and briefly in conversation with
Doug Renselle at www.quantonics.com. Referenced it today at www.pithemovie.com and looks interesting, thanks for bringing it
to my attention. - AH
Maybe Silent Running with Bruce Dern, Tweedledum and Tweedledee.
Colossus: The Forbin Project-1970; A Clockwork Orange, The Omega
Man, The Andromeda Strain, Escape From The Planet Of The Apes,-1971;
Solaris-1972; The Fantastic Planet, Westworld, Soylent Green-1973?
-AH
I remember seeing Colussus some time around 1974 and it really blew my 9 year old mind. I actually prefer the computer aspect to "2001".And I've got to agree on "Forbidden Planet"(hence my moniker) and "The Thing", although I prefer John Carpenter's 80's remake.
I also remember another 70's film - "Phase Four". It seemd great at the time, but may suck if viewed now.
Not really, or at least, no more or no less :~)
I do like Silent Running though. But is is another of those great SF movies where the battles are mostly internal - no aliens, no pirates etc.
It's also probably my overall favorite movie from any genre. Every single line of this movie is perfect.(and yes, it's Sci-Fi - remember, we're talking dead aliens here)
i don't know.i do know i want to go to a sci-fi film festival to see all the movies mentioned.
it's hard to remember since i haven't seen the old sci-fi movies in a long, long time. and i don't know how i would feel about them if i view them today.
i like the idea of the earth ending on some technicality like perhaps the day the earth stood still. or the more recent one, i can't recall the name when i meteorite hit the atlantic and causes a major tital wave that destroys most of the east coast.
i also like the invasion of the body snatchers, and the thing, if that's the name. the one that takes place on antartica. both the older and the newer versions.
