  I remember seeing Colussus some time around 1974 and it really blew my 9 year old mind. I actually prefer the computer aspect to "2001".

  And I've got to agree on "Forbidden Planet"(hence my moniker) and "The Thing", although I prefer John Carpenter's 80's remake.

  
  I also remember another 70's film - "Phase Four". It seemd great at the time, but may suck if viewed now.

  Not really, or at least, no more or no less :~)
  I do like Silent Running though. But is is another of those great SF movies where the battles are mostly internal - no aliens, no pirates etc.
