God is my witness, I tried to pull the attention from the SF... only to see someone launch the thread #277.How about compiling the list of the corniest, the most idiotically syrupy films?
My two initial nominations would be Terms of Endearment and Pretty Woman.
Follow Ups:

'corniest', 'syrupy'. you can cut into all genres with these words.all the hero action films are syrupy. no exceptions
maybe it's tied into more films than we think.
maybe all films romanticize life. it's not really life as we know it. an illusion of life.
corniest films. maybe 'from dusk to dawn', and 'pulp fiction'. 'the wizard of oz'.
Well, I am not sure I agree. Do you think Paths of Glory is syrupy? There is definitely some glorification, yes.***maybe all films romanticize life. it's not really life as we know it. an illusion of life.
Hmmm... even things like "120 Days of Sadom"? Man Bits Dog? I think there are plenty that strip any layer of romanticizm off life... unfortunately.
***corniest films. maybe 'from dusk to dawn', and 'pulp fiction'. 'the wizard of oz'.
You mean of course From Dusk Till Dawn, from dusk TO dawn is the 1913 silent film that no one has seen, I suspect.
I dunno, I would not call From Dusk Till Dawn corny, I think it is well below that... your average all-around trash.

Besides "SPR", Victor might as well add "Forrest Gump", "Apollo 13", "Philadelphia", "Sleepless In Seattle", etc.Personally, I like these sweet movies. But now I have diabetes.
Want to see Victor have a seizure? Mention the collected works of Steven Spielberg. Or Roberto Benigni's "Life Is Beautiful."
He-he... Steve, I think I probably should hate Tom, but I still don't. Some of his work - by all means! Let's destroy all copies of Philadelphia while AuPh is out driving! But Tom is a good comedian and he can be enjoyable.
However, for the life of me I can't understand the popularity of Benigni! He is simply a pale copy of several truly great European actors - a crossbreed between Pierre Richard and Luis De Funes. I expect the public to forget his name in just a few short years.
His "Life is Beautiful" was kaka, well worth mentioning in this thread.
Perhaps his finest moment in world cinema was the duck walk scenes in "Il Monstro"
Benigni's Pinnochio is being dubbed into English for US release by...Queen Latifah, Cheech Marin and Benigni himself, among others.
Totally contrived and pretentious!
What a pile of syrupy drek!
yeah especially the first twenty minutes or so.Group hug anyone?

It is only with the heart that one can see rightly. What is essential is invisible to the eye. - Antoine De Saint-Exupery
A bunch of battle hardened grunts in June 1944 were about as likely to come up with the kind of dialog in "Ryan" as fly to the moon.
Gary Ribisi's pukey monolog in the church would've been punctuated by some NJ conscript beating him over the skull with his own helmet, with no shortage of 4 letter words describing his origins and that of his mother ...
Spielberg once again shows he can adequately research locations, vehicles, uniforms and equipment in minutae, and STILL klutz it all up
I swear he must sit through previews of his films watching the audience and laughing his ass off
He'd make a great cab driver

just hugs!
With the single most idiotic line in film history, "love means never having to say you're sorry". Anyone who has been married for any length of time knows that love FREQUENTLY means having to say you're sorry.Other candidates are..
Well crafted and does what it's supposed to do...which is more than you can say about most Films.
that after a few months (years, if one is lucky), marriage and love have little to do with each other. If one is lucky, respect and caring are integral parts of the picture, and occasional flings (on either side) are forgiven.
Happy smilies to all!

Steel Magnolias (used to be my wife's favorite!)
Patch Adams (ugh!)
Titanic!
I gave at the office!
Hated it!
"Love Story" with Ryan O'Neil and Ali McGraw -- ugh -- I want to hurl chunks just thinking about this one."City of Angels" with Meg Ryan and Nick Cage -- never mind the insipid plot, just seeing Meg Ryan play a brain surgeon put me off my feed for a week.
"The Other Side of the Mountain" (aka "Gangway, Paraplegic Coming Through") -- mawkish and manipulative.
"Centennial Man" with Robin Williams -- so saccharine it should come with a shot of insulin.
"Ghost" with Patrick Swayze and Demi Moore -- I saw this one in the theater, and by the time the movie was half-way through I was wishing that *I* was the one who was dead.
TGIF...............
I was thinking of Love Story too,
