Is Hollywood Video. A new store location just opened very close to where I live. $1.99 for 5 nights so I guess I can watch a movie a few times over if I'm so inclined.So far I watched Rashomon, Yojimbo, and Seven Samurai. I did see the latter before as most video stores at least have this film. For $1.99, I decided to rent this one again!
Didn't really plan on buying these films although it may have come down to that. I'm glad I waited and now found a resource so I can check them out! Not the greatest selection but the price is certainly right. I was afraid of the quality of the film transfer as these are VHS but haven't run into a problem yet at least.

The film transfer quality has nothing to do with the tape or disc you watch at home. The negative transfer is usually done to a D1 or HDCam. It then is duplicated to DVD and VHS. The eventual quality of the VHS will likely be lower than a DVD but they both stem from the same film transfer.

I was worrying about the overall quality of the film being on VHS. Not sure why as I watched plenty of films in my day on VHS, but unfortunately no foreign films. Perhaps I worded my concern incorrectly. I didn't want to get the film home and watch a mess regarding picture quality. Perhaps there should not be a cause of concern because these are foreign films, I suppose then?BTW, I also rented Sanjuro and Forbidden Games. Cannot wait!!
I am envious now. I always keep this one close to my heart. You are in for a treat, man!Picture quality? If you embark on a search of good films, you need to expand your tolerance, as many have awful quality. But I think this is a reasonable admission price to pay.

They have many other other foreign films at Hollywood Video. Lots of martial arts more so than anything else though.
He mentioned another French film to try but I forgot the title to ask about it here. I did see a film on the shelf entitled "Red". Did you see that one? I'm going to do a search here to see if I find anything on that one so I may get my answer.
i was one that recommended forbidden games. of the ones you mentioned so far, i have that one and the seven samauri.forbidden games grabs you right from the start with the little girl losing her parents and carrying the dead dog. maybe it gets a little drawn out in the middle but the family characters are atypical and interesting.
the ending of this film is a killer. the loss that this child experiences is too much for me to bear.
red, blue, are more modern french films and i brought one of them home but only watched 5 minutes of it.
want to see a top foreign film of all time? they probably don't have it but the indian film 'pather pachali' is a must see. as tragic as 'forbidden games', the characters are even more ordinary and real. but it is also an artistic/philosophical achievement like a great work of art.
want a good italian film in an american action type genre? check out 'flight of the innocent'. action italian style (i.e., feelings too).
and a favorite italian comedy? 'johnny stecchino'. why the world loves robert begnigni. at least i do (but 'life is beautiful' was not a great film).
