He is passable in "Gilbert Grape" but only just
Jodie Foster is simply stellar in "the Hotel New Hampshire", after that it's all downhill. I think she's just wonderful in the (earlier) musical Bugsy Malone and Taxi Driver too
I keep watching her films in the hope that one day she'll do another good one, though admittedly it has now been some decades...

It's the money, silly.That's how she can play.
That may be to easy for an answer...I think that she has more than she needs and actor LOVES to be sucessful in the job they ( in this case ) assigne themself...
I think SHE is not THAT intelligent...There may lie the answer...
In the US we have a saying: "you can never be too rich or too thin."I think Ms. Foster has something of an unusual personality and, let's face it, how many of us had a guy attempt to assassinate a president to get our attention.
So, she could be quite smart and cynical: "if these peasants will pay to watch this garbage, why shouldn't I make it?"
Interestingly, if you notice, Ms. Foster acts "in a vacuum"; she never establishes much of a relationship with her other actors in the film, even when she is supposed to. I'm think particularly of her work in the U.S. remake of the French film "The Return of Martin Guerre" (the French film had Gerard Depardieu as Martin Guerre). In the remake, the setting was the U.S. Civil War. The Martin Guerre character was played by Richard Gere; Foster played his wife. Zero chemistry. In fact, more often than not, she establishes an "anti-relationship" where it's Foster vs. the world. "Panic Room" is but the latest example.
It happens too frequently to be a coincidence.
which really surprises me. Long ago, on another forum, her morons went on and on about how Contact was THE GREATEST movie ever made and she was the greatest thing since sliced bread. I nearly fell asleep in Contact, and--as usual--got really annoyed with her character. I've never been a rabid fan of any particular actor: either I'm decently balanced or just a deadhead . . . . well, good luck, Jody. Have a nice life.
