I finally got a DVD player and am now looking for some suggestions on what movies to buy. If everyone would give a top ten list of their favorite DVD's it will help me greatly (and maybe others as well)? On a side note where does everyone buy their DVD's at? I am of course like everyone looking for best prices.
Thanks,
Big Matt
The Wild Bunch (directors cut). Absolutely the best western
ever made ... well one of the 5 best, anyway. Haven't seen
the dvd version, but the ld restored version is great. And dont forget Chinatown, and The African Queen if it is available.
Mike
Thanks for the movie recommendations, guys. I have purchased some that have been mentioned, and will rent some of the others metioned.Big Matt
Here's my list. I've stuck to those I think have great video, or sound and are also good movies in their own right. There are a lot more I could recommend, but you only asked for ten, so here goes.10. The fugitive - get this for the DD 5.1 soundtrack, heck, get it for the train wreck at the start and just repeat it over and over and over.
9. 12 Monkeys - can't get enough of this movie, excellent transfer.
8. From the Earth to the Moon - OK it's a boxed set, but if you have even the slightest interest in Space this is a must-buy. Stunning visuals and just so well done it deserves to be seen by a lot more people.
7. Apollo 13 - you've probably seen this, but you haven't seen it in it's full glory if you haven't seen it on DVD. Apollo launch = great sub test.
6. Picnic at hanging rock (Criterion) - beautiful restoration and transfer of this etherreal and somewhat spooky movie.
5. Fiddler on the Roof - great restoration and transfer.
4. Kundun - visually, this is the best DVD I've seen and may be Scorsese's best movie ro date. As a movie about the life of the Dalai Lama it is far superior to 'Seven Years in Tibet'. This movie had a limited run in theatres due to pressure from the Chinese government, so not many people saw it. Get it on DVD for a visual treat.
3. Dances with Wolves - one of those movies you either loved or loathed. I loved it, but you need a better than average player and a BIG screen to get the most from this disc.
2. Casablanca - very impressive remastering and transfer.
1. Bladerunner - for whatever reason, probably my favorite movie and a great transfer.
In addition, buy or rent "Video Essentilas". You need this disc.

I watched Picnic at Hanging Rock for about the fifth time last night, and I can't get over how glorious that movie looks! Criterion really did a magnificent job. Too bad it's a featureless disc (a commentary by Weir would have been great), but at least we have the movie in all its glory. Definately spooky, but not in the traditional sense. Very supernatural! Good luck!
I forgot to mention this set. Definitely worth renting or buying.Spider and That's All There Is are my favorite episodes.
"Hey Neil, would you vote for John Glenn if he ran for president?"
"John Glenn for president? I don't know. That depends on who's running for King."

I think anyone whose worked in hi-tech will appreciate Spider. Difficult for me to pick out any real favorites as all th episodes are good for different reasons. It's interesting that "from the Earth to the Moon" picks up where "the right stuff" ends, so with both, you pretty much have the full story of the space race. I think you also need Apollo 13 as that episode is kind of glossed over in FTETTM (probably no concidence as Hanks was heavily involved in both).

1) Imax SUPER SPEEDWAY
2) DESPERADOES
3) SAVING PRIVATE RYAN
4) THE MUMMY
5) EAGLE'S HELL FREEZES OVER
6) FIFTH ELEMENT
7) TRUE LIES
8) ARMAGEDDON
9) INDEPENDENCE DAY (not out yet but check the link at AudioHolics)
10) DVD ESSENTIALS
Taking into consideration the film itself, the transfer, and the extras, my 10 favorite DVDs are:12 Monkeys (Universal)
Chinatown (Paramount)
Dark City (New Line)
Ronin (MGM)
The Seven Samurai (Criterion)
The Seventh Seal (Criterion)
Silverado (Columbia/Tri-Star)
The Third Man (Criterion)
Patton (Fox)
Vertigo (Universal)
Kind of hard to give a list when your tastes are unknown but here are my picks:Patton-----Two disks for the price of one. One disc has the movie and the other has a "making of" documentary plus lots more goodies. Image quality is outstanding for a movie made in the 70's.
Saving Private Ryan-----Setting aside Spielberg's shmaltzy presentation (> gasp <........e...Earn this..........Earn it) the menus, selections, and extra material are top notch.
Matrix---I don't own it (I don't think it was original) but I rented it and the extra features and image quality are just outstanding.
Blues Brother's Special edition-------Two words: Deleted Scenes!
Stanly Kubrick Collection---Nuff said.
Dollars Trilogy---Fistful of Dollars, For a few dollars more, and the good, bad and the ugly. You need classic westerns like this.
Twelve Monkeys and Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas. Terry Gilliam is da man.
Apocalypse Now. The menus and movie quality are well done.
