Feel the same way you do about "The Time Machine" vs "2001". "2001" was
a visual feast, viewed it upon initial release through the lens of methy-
lenedioxyamphetemine (MDA), a synthetic speed with hallucinogenic properties similar to mescaline. One of the opening scenes with the
sunset-siloheutted leopard with it's rumbling purr and gleaming eyes remains vivid in memory. Enjoyed "Fantastic Voyage" a lot, and "The Seven
Faces of Dr. Lao" is a personal favorite.
Concerning the 1950's, a couple of sci-fi films I liked are "20 Million
Miles To Earth" - has great effects by Ray Harryhausen; also "Earth Vs
The Flying Saucers" with more good Harryhausen. "This Island Earth" I
fairly liked, it has some nifty effects at times, but is a little too
B...ish overall...failed to emotionally connect with the characters, Exeter
is a strange dude. I liked "Them" better, always interesting to see
"The Former Thing" in the protagonists role!
