By this, I mean films that raise a lot of hype, even if it's only in our own minds, that we eagerly anticipate, but (perhaps because we're looking forward to them so much) dread will be F'd up. Example for me was Star Wars I. I had way too high expectations for this film I guess. Mystery Men is another example. The one I'm anticipating & dreading now is Lord of the Rings, in production right now in New Zeland (www.lordoftheringsmovie.com). Loved the books, even didn't mind the animated features of it and The Hobbit which came out years ago. Have the BBC productions on CD (drives my wife nuts when I load them into the car's changer at the start of a long road trip).
There's a lot of remakes going into production these days. These are the best of times, and the worst of times.
whenever and whatever it is, I know I'm going to hate it, but I'll probably end up watching it anyway.-Joe.
Jim Carey playing Andy Kaufmann, sheesh.-Joe.
The movie that I have mixed feelings about is the supposed X-MEN, based on how Marvel has done all their other previous movies involving their comic characters scares me as much as they disappoint me.
Peter Jackson is directing "Lord of the Rings" and he can be either brilliant ("Heavenly Creatures", "Dead Alive") or mediocre ("The Frighteners"). Let's hope for the former, but expectations of Tolkien can be so immense that the result may inevitably disappoint. At least he should exceed Ralph Bakshi's animated version.
I confess to having read every single one of JRR Tolkin's books, including that very dense "Saragaganomumm...what was it? Surandon.....", heck, I can't even pronounce it let along understand it.And Bakshi's attempt promised so much, because I couldn't imagaine any other way to tell these stories but by "comic book".
It's a good choice for this header Formerly Steve. There's just no way anyone--even Lucas, can do justice to what's in my head.
Yes, I will go to the theater to see this one, no matter how bad it is. I spent too many days/weeks of my life immersed in this fantasy not to.
Steve, did you read the other fantasy series of that period...I can't remember the details, but a guy who was dying of cancer or leporsy or something--I think there was a trilogy of that too. Started with a "C" I think...Conrad or something...there were giants and boats made from magic wood...this all runs together in my head.
And Beowolf is out again in a new translation...heard it on NPR. This time it's quite accessable. Oh that brings back those memeories of Saturday afternoons at the movie house watching the Voyages of Sinbad...great stuff! How can these epic adaptations of the Arabian tales and Homer and Virgil compare with Mutant Ninga Turtles?
So rewarding and enlightening.

Let's see Shore & Sandler's alive, but God wanted Hartman for himself. I guess he's greedy.
Star Wars 2 is one I'm not looking forward too. I got real sick of the hype and reaction for the first one (positive and negative). Hopefully the second time around everyone will just shut up.Is anyone a bit perturbed about EP1 being released worldwide on VHS but delayed indefinitely on DVD? I'm not going to buy the tape and I'm pretty sure I won't go see EP2 or EP3 until it's released on DVD. Lucas likes to toot his horn about being the first to use Dolby Surround, Surround EX, and digital "film" but why not release it on DVD!? Tannehill is right, he's got his head up his ass.

Actually he probably is a marketing genius. When the coffiers get a bit less than three metric tons, release a new/improved version of Star Wars. Build up expectation. Have many who have both VHS and DVD first buy the VHS, then much later release the DVD version and they buy all over again.Star Wars was released in the 70's and special versions were released in '99 making buccoo bucks still. Which generate/maintain the "back end" tie-ins to toys, which generates more interest in old/new versions, which then helps fill the coffiers back to the normal 10 metric tons of $100 bills!
That cow says MOO$$$$
"End of Days" has got to part of that category. Shriver must've been out of town, when Arnold agreed to do that part. It was as bad as "Blade" which was a great book & has little in common with the script. But back to the real subject, what I dread is "Matrix 2 & 3". Granted, it would make an excellent Showtime series after the "Stargate:SG-1" mold, but another film? I'm afraid it's going to be HighLander 2 all over again, where its existance requires a discontinuous rewrite of the original plot.
BTW, this topic's precisely what kept me away from Willis' "6th Sense". It seemed like it was another "Color of Night" type of flick. Not to mention it got good reviews, a near fool proof sign of painfully dreadful movie.
What I'd like is a "Lost in Space 2", but that was too good of a prospect to ever happen. Afterall, I still want to know how they cured the doctor. Plus, that little girl has an additive personality. She's adorable.
I am an Arnold Schwarznegger fan but the latest one is NOT one that I am looking forward to. I think I heard a review or maybe an interview with the tough guy himself and he was pitching the movie - not that I dont have my soft side (love a whole bunch of movies) but I am dont like the idea of this one.As for Matrix, I LOVED it - cannot imagine a sequel but it is possible - just depends on how they twist it; Matrix rates among my few best but I love all sci-fi except Contact (even like the hilarious ones like "Fifth Element". Now a sequel to that would fly would it not? You are right that I am dreading that they come out with a bad sequel to matrix but I am not one to criticise a sequel until I see it.
Any sequel to a good "art" movie is usually going to be bad I think.
Have not seen "Lost in Space" what is it about? serious no holes in sci fi plot or supposed to be funny and not to be taken too seriously - either is okay as long as it is not like "contact" - supposed to be serious but is too unbelievable for me (maybe the unscientific supernatural is not to my taste)
Another favourite - Mission Impossible. Hope #2 does not spoil things.
Well, I am a sci-fi and art movie fan. But I do not watch anything else except on video.
... I was so hoping for a director's cut to Mission Impossible. I thought that the editor left the plot on his room's floor. At least it seemed that way.
is fun, fast-paced romp through the space-time continuum. It even seemed to be the 1st place I saw 3-space CG as upgraded to slow-motion in "Matrix". The plot was a juxtaposition of an intellectually gifted dysfunctional family with all the internal traumas of teenager peer alienation, with life & death struggles from one obstacle to the next. Plus, it was plenty of delightful humorous dialog spiking the scenes. You'll like it.
I can't believe we're discussing the merits of "Lost In Space II"Anyone up for a screening of "Sleepy Hollow II" while we're at it?
Lost In Space was eye candy. No more, no less. Eye Candy with a strategically placed muppet for marketing purposes. Don't get me wrong, it's a demo piece for my line doubled projector, but good performances? Plot? Riveting dialog? please.
I personally am dreading the next Bond if it's in the same vein as "The World is Not Enough."
under those conditions [good performances? Plot? Riveting dialog?] it could be frighteningly worse sequel ..."Steel Magnolias 2"
"First Wives Club 2"
"Preacher's Wife 2"
"Titanic 2"
"Dangerous Liaisons 2"
"Bridges Of Madison County 2"
"Sophies Choice 2"
"Fatal Attraction 2"
"Mary Reilly 2"
"French Lieutenant's Woman 2"
"English Patient 2"
I'll stop now, before involuntary convulsions ensue...
Almost cried at the end...
I paid $8 to be subjected to this torture?
Bond faces his greatest challenge as former lovers in seventy two countries sue him for child support. Will Bond be able to protect his assets, financial and otherwise? Stay tuned for: "The Spy Who Came In The Cold."
Steve, this is a great Bond storyline......one which is far superior to the crappola we've been dealt in the last 10( some would say 30) years or so.Of course, the REAL Bond( S.C.)would have to be brought back for this one. Bravo!
"Lost in Space 2"

which part did you hate ...1) the full 3D character development?
2) the understated humor?
3) the constantly evolving polt & sub-plots?
I know the friend's actor (pilot) wasn't upto the job, but everyone else was fine. At least he didn't destroy the movie, like Chris Tucker in "5th Element".

Take out the obvious marketing gimmicks (spider smith and blawp, designed to sell more 64 oz bladder busters at circle K) and you've actually got a pretty good movie that remains faithful the first season of LIS, which was ground breaking sci-fi for it's time. (Remember the sorta salt-shaker-christmas-ornament-shaped ship in episode 2, "The Derelict"? Nothing like it had ever been seen before on TV or in the movies until Star Wars appeared nearly 17 years later).I also thought Matt LeBlac's performance was excellent, as was the kid who played Will (can't remember his name offhand), and Gary Oldman was perfect as Dr. Smith. Mimi Rogers seemed a bit lost but she really wasn't given much to do..... and I don't think she likes playing a mom after being such a hottie for the past decade.
I doubt that there will be a sequel since New Lines plans for a big video rollout bombed but if there is it should be easy to correct the mis-steps of the first movie for a really excellent second installment.
Scott
are "bladder blasters" an alias for a super-soakers?& what's a "Circle K"?
what was "Mimi Rogers" in? I don't recall ever seeing her before?
...with big, no, make it VERY big, shall we say, aspirations? Her greatest contribution was in breaking-in Tom Cruse - she was his first wife. He dumped her - she is older that he.I sort of like her, she is much less offensive than your typical Hollywood star. Don't recall any truly good roles, though.
64 oz "bladder buster" - giant size pop guaranteed to make you pee twice before you finish it.Circle K = Convenience store = "no shirt, no shoes, no problem"
You can check out Mimi Rogers' past film roles on the IMBD. Full Body Massage!!!!!!!!!!!
