In Reply to: SOmeone called the new Solaris the worst stinker of the past 20 years... posted by Victor Khomenko on December 04, 2002 at 17:17:17:
solaris is already in theaters. i don't understand why people are predisposed to say the solaris remake sucks before seeing it. that's being as smart as people who think a movie must suck because it's not in english.
Follow Ups:
That phrase was by someone who saw the film.I looked at the release schedule - you are right, it IS already out. But AuPh keeps quiet... that doesn't sound too good, I am afraid... :-))
i'm talking about people here.
Last weekend when it opened I wasn't feeling well enough to see it and I'm still not up for hanging with crowds yet. Unfortunately, the Solaris trailers I've seen haven't impressed me any more than the original film, except that the effects I've glimpsed look better. In any case, there are several other major films opening soon that have more promise, so if I don't catch Solaris this coming weekend I may end up waiting to see the new improved version on video.
Which other major ones are opening?
It's a movie about a frustrated screenwriter featuring Nicolas Cage (my wife, in addition to being an author and aspiring screenwriter is a big Nicolas Cage fan, so if I'm fully recuperated I'm pretty sure we'll see Adaptation before Solaris; also, the reviews are nearly 100% positive for Adaptation on the Rotten Tomatoes site).
***i don't understand why people are predisposed to say the solaris remake sucks before seeing it.Well, would a bad director and a horrible lead actor be sufficient reason? Some of us call that "track record". I am sure that turned many people off. Me - I simply never pay to watch a Hollywood film. If it ever hits the free cable channel I will probably watch it.
I had read that Soderberg originally wanted Daniel Day Lewis for that
role, but Lewis was busy making Scorcese's "Gangs of New York" at the
time, so he asked what's his name. I personally don't have any
affinity or animosity toward what's his butt, thought he was OK in "Three Kings", but like Kevin Costner, he's never really made any
great impression on me. Maybe Jeremy Irons would have been a better
choice? BTW, unfortunately missed the original Solaris on TCM, it's
out of stock at amazon.com., but will keep an eye open. - AH

Well, that role calls for someone thoughtful, insightful, who can play inner emotions. None of the above applies to George.Hmmmm... Jeremy? I love that actor and that surely would be an intriguing idea. And you know what - I think several great British guys would be great in that role. Let's face it - I wish Anthony Hopkins made that one instead of his atrocious Hannibal trash. What a waste of great acting talent! Saw him sime time ago in the Bounty again - simply marvelous!!!!!!!!!
