If I have a quibble it's that Tolkien writes in a style that's not user friendly. Ok, novelistic practices change. The thing about Hobbit history, yes. Throat clearing that a modern novelist would have avoided. Also the Tom Bombadil episode is a problem.Seeing the ents in the Two Towers I was reminded of Bombadil. Tolkien definitely had an axe or two to grind environmentally. Not a bad thing in my view.
