GoodfellasI am trying to round out my order with some "ACTION" movies too since these are probably better candidates for the enjoyment of surround sound effects. However, any recommendations about movies with Geography or History in them? Or even any art movies? Scenes etc. If I had a real HDTV or a 16:9 format TV, I would get "Horse Whisperer" just for scenes even though I did not really enjoy the movie.
Try "Last of the Mohicans". Scenery, and sounds are great. The scene, and sound, of the scene where the French are shelling the British fort at night is something else.
two films I remember from the theater: "Dances with Wolves"--even though Cosner makes me puke, and the story is so lame they should have hung the writers from a sun pole, the film is quite beautiful--breathtaking panoramas of the plains. Had anyone else been cast in the leading role, it would have been a classic. Must be seen on a big screen for full effect. The other one I loved for the music and the cinematography: "The Mission"
***The other one I loved for the music and the cinematography: "The Mission"And just which one of several "Mission, The" it is?
Philip Bosco, Aldan Quinn. "Jeremy Irons plays a Spanish Jesuit who goes into the South American wilderness to build a mission in the hope of converting the Indians of the region. Robert De Niro plays a slave hunter who is converted and joins Irons in his mission." --from Martin & Porter's "Video Movie Guide".There is a bizzare scene with the natives singing in the church...one of many excellent scenes that make the movie magic work for me: a visual/audio effect so powerful it has a physical effect on the body, that explains the beauty and horrors of the Europeans arrival in the New World in a way no history book can.
I love an intelligent script, a good story, clever dialog, but that's what a play can do best. Great film gets your eyes wide shut--forcing you to feel the moment.
I am not sure they fall under the traditional definition of "action" but Kurosawa's Ran and Kagemusha both are rich in battle action and images that is breathtaking. And if you love images and tremendous quiet beauty - look at the Dreams. I am not sure, however, how good the DVD transfers are. The Ran I have is mediocre. For images so thick that you can't even cut them with the samurai sword - there is none better that any of Greenaway's masterpieces. If you only have to get one - get the Cook. However, for the extra-super-ultimate balls-to-the-wall indulgence look no further than the Prospero's Book. If you can sail through that one (and it is beautiful beyond belief) consider yourself a real man.
mean The cook the thief his wife and her lover or some other movie. Call me crazy but I like even that. Maybe because I like France, haute cuisine and art movies all very passionately. Victor or Steve, let me know if you know of any other movies. And thanks again.

I just finished cleaning about 200 LPs on my VPI-17F and boy do I need a break. So, here's a few "art film" recommendations from the Far East or Southeast.India: "The Apu Trilogy"
Taiwan: "Eat Drink Man Woman"
Vietnam: "Scent of Green Papaya"
Hong Kong: "Chungking Express"
China: "To Live" and "Farewell My Concubine"
Korea: "Why Has Bodhi Dharma Left To The East?"
Japan: "Kwaidan"
I see that Victor has played his Pasolini trump card in recommending "Salo". I'd add Pasolini's "Arabian Nights" to complete his "Trilogy of Life" and remark that all three are pretty good looking on DVD. I just got Kiarostami's "Taste of Cherry" and am now looking forward to seeing his Koker Trilogy. Finally, I should point out that in Oklahoma City it is illegal to rent or possess a copy of Schlondorf's Oscar-winning "The Tin Drum" because it has been judged as obscene under their local child pornography laws. Local police have used strong arm tactics to obtain rental lists from video stores and have raided private residences to issue arrests and obtain the film copies for evidence. I'm hiding my laserdisc copy just in case Central Ohio goes fascist-conservative under our new mayor.
As David Byrne sang: "This is not my beautiful house. This is not my beautiful wife. How did I get here?"
I will NOT be renting "the Tin Drum". As you say, one never knows who is "watching". And who knows which politician will ignite something. As it was a bureacracy ridden road to naturalisation, I do not relish the the thought of squandering my "freedom" (to watch movies?) away. Maybe France then. Thanks for all the other suggestions.
Please let everyone know that anyone caught watching any of the Leonardo's movie will be deported to Zanzibarsk-on-Kamtchatka.Start with his movies and then keep adding to the list... weekly updates, you know...
.
I ordered Ronin and "DVD Spectacular just" yesterday from Amazon. I hope the 1812 Overture is a good recording in the latter.
I was dissapointed with the 5.1 sound of Top Gun on DVD. If your looking for good sound Das Boot is a great one so is Super Speedway.MiKe
i must be nuts but I am a car nut too.
...and how about some firearms-related and military hardware-driven movies? Do I hear Charles Bronson loading super-duper handmade ammo for his AutoMag? Too bad the Casul was not designed by that time. Makes Clint look rather lame with his 4 foot long "minigun"."Sniper" was entertaining....but then again I have that warm spot for Tom. He is of right political persuasion. That movie has at least *some* plausability about it, unlike your typical Arlond stuff.
Well, hate to bring it up again, but Ronin is good in that respect. And what was the title of that one with De Niro and Val Kilmer robbing banks?
Hate to disappoint but I am an Arnold fan too. Like his humour. DeNiro Val Kilmer was HEAT. No, I have not seen so many movies to know names of hand generally. I know of HEAT since I like DeNiro movies which I think are hilarious just as I think Arnold movies are (no, I am not trying to belittle them. My brothers and I and now even my wife watch them as comedy/action flicks). Analyse This and Casino are two really funny movies IMHO. So much for pop movies. I was actually on this site to figure out sci fi and art movies actually but nevertheless..... anything goes.
And no, I am not a gun enthusiast, maybe a watch, auto, wine, cuisine and much else enthusiast but not a gun enthusiast. Hmmm, I seem to like all these crazy movies though.... maybe..
Cheers
