they are available in the u.s. on videotape.

the dvds of many foreign/art-house films look no better than the videotape version and made from worn prints (i am thinking of companies like image, new yorker films, etc.).

unless criterion puts together a nice dvd package, many of these films often don't fare better on dvd than video.

the biggest loss for us filmgoers, however, is the quality of the subtitle translations on some of these films.
