Roland Joffé, the director of the memorable "The Killing Fields" has decided to give us HIS rendition of life in the 17th century Paris. He hires some luminaries: Gerard Depardieu and Uma Thurman. Too bad the old man Gerard is getting fatter every year, and by the 2000 (the year when the move was made) he is alreadly almost perfectly square.
I guess the director had a vision of exceeding the "Ridicule" and "Barry Lyndon" in its opulence, and that spells fatal flaw in the film. Sure, the interiors - and exteriors, for that matter - ARE beautiful... all that dirty green and gilding... except - they seem decidedly out of place in 1671. Why - most of them are from the later period.
But the fatal blow - tons of pun in that one - comes in the duel scene, where the participants all pull out what appears to be the middle-18th century smallswords. OK, OK, that was not the fatal one, as the truly fatal one is administered by Vatel himself and onto himself... and again, with an 18th century piece.
The plot... the acting... the directing... Ah, who cares, when Gerard is on the screen surrounded by the decadent beauties of all sorts - of which Uma is not the top one.
Follow Ups:
Gerard, is now slim ( relatively ) again, after his heart attack, and bypass chirurgy...and he is producing more wine...( years ago I try one of his bottle..)beurgh......
I heard a French celebrity (sorry, can't remember the name) on an English talk show describe the wine as tasting like "squid ink". But he said Gerard makes a lot of money selling it... to Americans.
"Oh no, I can't do anything to the death. Doctor's orders. You see, I have this ulcer condition, and death is the worst thing for it."
I think I read somewhere that he bought new and better wineyards...
Let´s hope for better quality for the US...

Well, smart Americans don't drink the French stuff. You get better wine for far better prices elsewhere. Only cheap snobs or super-rich still buy them here :-))) I just had two bottles of Australian wine for $15 ea (bought on special recommendation), and they were to die for. You would have to pay $50 or so for a French drink to equal that quality.
Did you see Vatel?
One of my daughter brought me back a botlle of Chardonnay from South Africa...It was terribly bad. But it was bad luck...any way I will stick to Bourgone & Loire & Alsace & Rhine...
Vatel, no, did even try, after reading the critics....But as said above I try Napoleon......
