Patrick, I don't remember Don Camillo. The only film by Julien Duvivier that I remember for sure is "Le Diable et les dix commandements", and that, of course, was an incredible film. I might have seen others in my youth, but not sure at the moment.Fernandel was an "approved" actor with the Soviet authorities (I guess because he liked showing the capitalist world in not too pretty a light), so many of his films were allowed into the country, and we were fortunate enough to get familiar with that wonderful actor.
He is still very respected in Russia, and just a few weeks back they had a nice program on him on the Russian TV that people can receive here via the sat, so we were given a tape.
Imagine - the Russians still have programs (and more than one) that deal with great classical films!
What nerve!
Victor, your post made me smile, and do you know why ? Because this films ( four in all and two of them made by Duvivier ) ...plays in a small town of Italy...where Don Camillo ( Fernandel)
is the priest ( Don ) and Cervi is...the mayor...but ô shame an communist...Camillo has always dialog with the Christ on his cross, and you can imagine how funny some situations may have been....It did reflect the fifties where there was a strong communist party in France and Italy.
No wonder the Russians may have been barred from it. If they have been it worst than Ninochka who was one side eyed, what this films never where.
