thank you very much, that was most informative.here is a copy of the review from that site>
"The eventual conflict of the film deals with Kelvin's scientific understanding and his emotional conscious, sub-conscious and repressed memories in the guise of his 7-year deceased wife whose form has returned to him by the unknown intelligence. His past is reflected in relived sequences with his wife and mother. Tarkovsky's greatest ability is how he transforms the mood and setting through imagery and unspoken words. It appears so subtle that the closest thing I could compare it to is hypnosis. His use of positioning within the frame reminds me of Kurosawa, but his use of cinema as an instrument of art is without match. Every scene is a well thought cerebral experience for the viewer."
The new Image release of Solaris is reportedly an improvement with a choice of 2 soundtracks.
do you mean an improvement over their prior release of solaris? where do you find your news - i'm always looking for good sources of info on dvdsgod bless image entertainment for releasing movies that we'd otherwise not find on dvd. i think criterion has been consistently superior to image entertainment on the same titles, albeit costing more - for example, the recent dvd releases of 8-1/2 by both companies.
I dont remember which dvd site it was, but it was the dual soundtrack that was especially touted. apparantly a new soundtrack not usually available on dvd is included and is very nice. It would be hard to beat a Criterion release in video quality.
