Saw this last week.I had browsed through the commentary here and while it alerted me to some of the things that had bothered others I was very quickly in 'suspended disbelief' anyway.
Now I am one of those who was very worried that any film could not be up to the book. Even that animated version came after I had read it.
NB I first read the three volumes in one sitting, taking a day off work as I had read through the night. The most unput-downable book ever for me. I have just about everything JRR wrote, and re-read much of it regularly.
Despite the small plot changes eg aAagorn nearly killed by the warg riders, I though it was just great.
AND I didn't mind the CGI Gollum, his split conversations were very moving. The moral dilemnas in the story were very well done IMO.
We also hired the DVD of FoTR last night and it confirmed my view that he quality has not slipped. So, the decision to make it all in one go was right.
We will eventualloy buy the director's cut when all 3 are available.

Follow Ups:
I am trying to resist the temptation to re-read the books. I think one thing that makes the movies more enjoyable for me is not remembering exactly what happens next.
"Oh no, I can't do anything to the death. Doctor's orders. You see, I have this ulcer condition, and death is the worst thing for it."
I saw it for the second time last week...Infinitely better the second time around (got all the nitpicking plot change bantor out of the way the first time). I guess it's a testament to the greatness of the book that I would be defensive about "professor" Tolkien's exact words.
The second time I was able to enjoy the movie "as a movie", as an art form in itself, not merely as an adaptation of a book. Just sucks that I had to spend an extra $8 to enjoy it.
Both the wife and I made the mistake of re-reading TT just prior to seeing the film, and we spent most of the ride home dissecting plot deviations rather than acknowledging what a great ride the film is.I'm not going to be able to resist the temptation to re-read Return of the King-it's been calling to me from the shelf for several days now :)
