Has the highest demanding photographie I have seen in year, every picture is a perfect formed world, it live an die in every each of its frame.
Claire seems to love the male bodys, if she would not be a woman I would accuse her of homosexuality, it there something to accuse, as her legionnaires move along, turning on themselves, I do not have read the Melville book, so it is diffficult in this case, what is what from who...
It has a tragic dimension, of Roman grandeur pared with the Gregorians holy songs of songs.
Is it jalousie? is it hostility, is it the very core of primitivity, the will to destroy someone seemingly as fragile as this born on the marchse young Russian boy.
A very French film, Camus like.
I had wishe a little more profund exploration in the motivs of this tale...But as Marseilles in the background with its church looking upon, nobody is perfect.
Thank you Victor.
Follow Ups:
...despite the subject matter.I enjoyed watching the guys go through their training hoops, but the best single shot was the one of the tall strapping men at their ironing boards.
It was filmed by a woman...
But what is with the rest of the picture ? What is about the plot ? And yes there is one, more difficult to pin point...
Comment & elaborate !
This one has more than nice pictures !
Down below there IS a story. But I am still not certain what it REALLY was....
The story is based on Melville's Billy Budd and some of the rather odd music is taken from Britten's opera of the same name. Many believe it to have a homosexual subtext but in my opinion it needn't be read that way.
Well the FILM is definitively underlying the homosexuality in the story, that is the reason why the young fellow is send to death...
Plus, is homosexuality a movie-worthy tragic situation? Be careful! You may get pounced upon...
Don´t worry, I already been accused of being homosexual last week, and they promised me the old biblical chatiment for sodomie....
So, but let´s come back to the point....
First, you have the " friendship " and respect between Galoup and the commandant...easy play...then you have theentry of the " ephebe " Sentain " remember the twilight ( actually night ) between him and Subor when he speaks of his youth...the commandant says then to him beautiful child ( or something like this )
After that the jalousie of Galoup grown...he rebels...and send his rival to death....
A woman * filming witch elaborate the beautiful ( ! ) men bodys...
I had prefer to be in a women regiment...* ambivalent as the story but the two actually match. ( the latent homosexuality and Mrs.Claire mannly body lust....)

...Beau Travail establishes a milieu where bunk-buddies are more unlikely than aboard ship. Or, not...
Sounds like you had your monocle cleaned and working well... glad you enjoyed it.How popular is Leni in France?
Leni ? I do not know, I think as much than in the US of A...
But, tell me, or better said, what is YOUR point of view of this movie, does it differ from mine and how ?
My impressions are not so different from yours. It IS exceedingly poetic, in each frame. I had the disadvantage of watching it on cable, so I missed the very beginning, but I got immediately drawn into it as I turned it on, without knowing what I was watching. One could say it is simply a parade of images, but that is not so, as people do play important roles in the film. But they also play a very natural role, almost like just support actors to the main one called MOOD.
Exactly, I forgot to write that in this motion picture, you could never be certain if the actors act or if the act were the actors...So to speak.
Patrick,
I do not know what you you mean.
But as I am leaving my house for a friends " coq au vin " I will sommairement ( summraly ? ) tell you that if my memory is right that BB did spoil on this film everything you could have, and anyway I do not like Godard, the archityp of the would be French intellectual, and even " A bout de souffle " his masterpiece bore me to death with is false pretentionS.
Week End was more amusing as it was prophetic, but still most bor....
Bonne soirée !
