I like the movie very much as well. I like movies with atmosphere and this is one of them. There are a lot good movies in the style (French, German, Japanese, Russian etc) but so awfully few within the scifi genre.
I also liked Silent Running and Matrix by the way.
I think 50% liking is not so bad really since most people like action movies and loath movies without action.
I enjoy action movies as well as anybody else, but not if there is no plot and only action.
Follow Ups:
For the record, I like "2001" also.At any rate, I was looking over the selection of new releases in Blockbuster this weekend, when along comes a group of teenyboppers (that term shows my age, I guess). One of them suggested "The Shining", but this was rejected by the rest of the group. The reasons? It was "old" and "long"! And yes, it really was a new release - a newly released remake (like we really needed one).
