The film was incredibly controversial then and the arguments were pretty much the same as now, except the drug references have faded over the years. I would say a 50/50 split is probably better now than then. I would say it was more like 40/60 for/against back then.I've seen both the 165 and the 140 minute versions. The longer version contains lots of interesting details, especially on the space station, but little that advances the film. The cut minutes aren't really missed, although I must admit that I sure noticed the second time I saw the film - some months later.
I would reckon I have seen the film at least 25 times. Back in those days I was known to ingest certain "substances" which may have slightly altered perception, and "2001" was the ultimate "stoner flick." Psychedelic without meaning to be. OR WAS IT?
It is on my top-10 films of all time list. For what that's worth.
Follow Ups:
Hi Danj you old fart,is it really that long ago, 68? I thought it came out early 70s?
It is on my top ten list as well for the same reasons. I never really got into this drug thing (fortunately I lost the only trip I ever bought in Holland at the time, (where it was legal by the way) and I am glad now I didn't take it). But I find watching a movie like that or listening to certain music psychadelic enough. Also I think it is the parts that you don't see that make a good movie (like Hitchcock movies, which I love), you imagine the rest and that is much more than any movie can show me.
you have me curious to see this film again. i only saw it once at the movies. i remember it being interesting,i'd like to see it on my home theater and i will look for it. i hope it has good sound, remastered or whatever.
(i must have missed the psychedelic aspect of it. no one told me what film to see. so instead i guess, i went to an all-nighter horror flick show, watching films like 'freaks'. i made it to about 2-3 in the morning.
stepped out of that college auditorium. i had had enough!) :)
