First, you have the " friendship " and respect between Galoup and the commandant...easy play...then you have theentry of the " ephebe " Sentain " remember the twilight ( actually night ) between him and Subor when he speaks of his youth...the commandant says then to him beautiful child ( or something like this )
After that the jalousie of Galoup grown...he rebels...and send his rival to death....
A woman * filming witch elaborate the beautiful ( ! ) men bodys...
I had prefer to be in a women regiment...

* ambivalent as the story but the two actually match. ( the latent homosexuality and Mrs.Claire mannly body lust....)
