these guys are being way too tough. Hey, Mel may not be the most gifted actor, any more than any of the other action heroes, but I'm with you, I thought Signs was a good film, suspense filled fun.
Follow Ups:
...mostly hokum, but I KNEW it was hokum and that's what I enjoyed about it. (And the director knew we knew, y'know?) No blood, gore, and very few special effects, but Signs made me jump in my seat, more than once, even when I KNEW it was coming.Signs isn't great cinema, but it was fun. I also admire the director for using the power of suggestion so effectively - it's what you don't see that's the scariest. If only more filmmakers would take this to heart.
Yup, sure it was predictable in an Alfred Hitchcock sort of vein, but it had terrific startle factor and was more eery because it lacked the specific effects and left more to the imagination. I think people look for too much in a lot of films and forget that it's just entertainment.BTW: I just rented Mel's other recent film, When We Were Soldiers. That one has plenty of blood and gore, too much really, but then war is about blood and gore. It's billed as Mel's best since Braveheart and I'd probably agree, he's surely at home playing the war hero.
I found it one of the most boring movies I have seen recently. Totally unmotivated, predictable and badly made. I think the whole storyline was misguided. Very disappointing, I did not go to see it at the movies because I thought from the preview that is not good, I finally (had to!) watched it in the plane. I really cannot see what you made jump in your seat, I rather slumped in mine... Very illogic too by the way.
Sorry, that is my opinion.
...on a plane would just not work for me. (Engine noise - that would make me jump.) Besides, I hate the way films are edited for in-flight movies. Suspense films need to be seen on the big scfreen in the dark with other people.I agree the premise is dumb. The plot has plenty of holes if you look for them. But I still thought it was very atmospheric.
i liked the film. i can see how some would see it the way they do. and i certainly agree it's not a movie to watch on a plane.the movie, intentionally or unintentionally has a certain off-temponess to it. it has a certain, apparently deliberate, slow and controlled tempo. it's a quirky movie.
it has major weaknesses for sure. i think the whole baseball thing was way too contrived. but it was used to fit into the whole notion that there is a reason for everything, and perhaps only a homerun/strike out slugger could have taken care of the situation. but that is a bit pathetic.
it's a movie to sit back, relax, and watch a bit of inaninity.
