Caught this film in a few places the other nite (channel surfing);
immediately noticed the excellent makeup and set design, then
referenced one of my movie guides, these won Oscars, well deserved.
Favorite makeup-job: Little Face (Steve Meyers); favorite character:
Mumbles (Dustin Hoffman). - AH
Follow Ups:
Some of Republic's best; there were also several "B" movies with Byrd and one has Boris Karloff portraying Gruesome. For some reason Warren Beatty never worked for me as Tracy.
AH,I saw "Dick Tracy" recently for the first time. As you mention, the visual transferrance of the comic strip to live action was imaginative- the brash, flat colours, hard, shadowless lighting, generic "1939 Car", costumes, make-up, etc. Really quite amazing in some visual ways in the sense of reproducing the old comic book (sorry- "graphic novel") look.
The problem is that the story and characters just didn't engage my attention for more than 10 minutes- I immediately wondered off into attention to the movie's look and soon thereafter wondered off to C-SPAN- where something was happening.
A missed opportunity.
Cheers,
Yes, a nightmare comes true....
