Sound & Vision Jan / Feb 2003Who had thought to find a critic of THIS film in THIS magazin ?
And not ( even if a short one) a bad one...
I read :Director Claire Denis took Herman Melville´s Billy Budd as the starting point for this austerely shot tale of a French Foreign Legion veteran succumbing to jealous rage over a young recruit. The movie is actually less about latent homosexuality than about the alienation of men emotionnaly adrift in a land they don´t understand.
It´s fascinating but also emotionally arid. The transfer captures the sun-drench imagery nicel, and offers plenty of detail in night scenes- although edge enhancement of moving objects is sometimes visible.
The sountrack has wide dynmic range and is particuliarly effective with the film´s atmospheric winds.

maybe less surprising, beau travail was voted #1 in the village voice critics poll of 2001 films about one year back.
