i heard spike used the anger of the entire nation and specifically new york for the wtc as a backdrop to the main character's rage.
a macrocosm for his emotions and helplessness.

the mirror scene was terrific - showing his self-hatred externalized. one possible interpretation of the ending car ride - while passing peacefully by all of the ny characters he railed against in the mirror - maybe that was his coming to peace with them and therefore, ny and himself.
