I haven't seen most of the films myself. But I'd be amazed if anyone acted better than Daniel Day-Lewis in Gangs of NY. I don't know that I've seen better acting in 20 years or so.

Little piece about it: my mom saw the film. She grew up in the 1930's in Manhattan. She was amazed by his accent. She said it was amazing -- it was the exact accent she used to hear from old people in her youth, and hadn't heard since.

Of course, she recoiled from all the violence...
