My view of this film is very akin to yours - enjoyable, but not very substantial. The conundrum is why did it do wo well in the U.S. market (over $200 million!)?If you believe that the U.S. market wants big, comic-book type films (which I do), then this picture shouldn't do that well. If you believe that the U.S. market wants superbly crafted, artistic films, this film would do better, possibly, but still not that well. And other romantic comedies haven't done that well (I don't think even "Four Weddings and a Funeral did close to this kind of business). So this one leaves me scratching my head.
"Well, a satirical piece in the Times is one thing, but bricks and baseball bats really gets right to the point. "
Follow Ups:
It's thrust covered EVERY ethnic group in America. Everyone felt a common bond to it because it is soooo family. It could have been named "Big Fat Ethnic Wedding" and it would have still done the same. I thought it was a relatively poorly done film from every aspect, but it nailed everybody's family and relatives. Everybody relates. It will be interesting to see how "The Guru" fairs with its more "brand name" cast.
In my first post i already mentionned ...no explosions, no deads...I think a lot of people are tired of this kind of boum boum... and a slow moving picture with a little lightness of beeing and romantism, can not do wrong AND Tom seems to have an lucky hand at the moment....
