As one who spent many years in Rio (born there) and goes back every year or two, I highly recommend this movie as a realistic portrayal of the life lived by the "marginais," or criminals on the edges of society.
Favela (the mountain/ hillside shanty towns) life is shown stripped of all "carnaval" tinsel.
The "actors," for the most part guys from the 'hood, are convincing, the camerawork/direction/music---excellent.
The story may be a bit ambitious, spanning too many characters and decades, but the raw power is jolting, and no Hollywood studio forced saccharine into it.
I don't think I'll ever forget some of the characters. Definitely one of the year's best.
Follow Ups:
I went in expecting some Brazilian Tarantino film, maybe trashy, derivative entertainment and not much else...But damn.
I can't think of a single fault, except for maybe some overquick editing in exactly one scene. But that'd be if I had to come up with something. It's really a GREAT movie, in the superlative, stands-with-the-best films sense.
About time, too. Great movies have been in very short supply as of late. Witness 'Spider,' another Cronenberg movie that should be excellent, has everything in place to excellent, and still manages to be sterile.
Hey, something we can agree on. I saw it in raw unmixed form with no tranlation and no subtitles. It still held my attention. Without knowing exactly what was being said it was riviting and sometimes disturbing.
"Central Station" (the female lead was "robbed" of best actress Oscar, I think), go get 'em from your local vid store. Brazilian cinema is underrated (so is the cuisine, but that's another story!).
