Inadverdently stumbled across "Pi" at videostore, have viewed it
several times. Remember you had asked had I seen it. I like it.
Guess one must "read between the numbers" for interpretations?
There is a brief shot within a beach scene that I really liked, and
consider it one of the two most aesthetically pleasing shots in
the film: Max is sitting (daytime)on a beachshore contemplating,
he is in foreground, to the right of him(viewers left), also in foreground, is
a large rock, a tower(?) is in background and appears to be jutting
up from the rock, then a pretty seagull flys up to the left of Max and
out of frame, I believe. Struck me as symmetrically balanced
composition, with static (Max,rock, tower)and dynamic(bird)elements. Was this your inspiration for your
posting bird? The other pleasing shot was when Max stared out his
door peephole at his pretty neighbor standing in a flowered(?) dress.
They provide some welcome contrast to the often frenetic ugliness.
Read a few imdb member reviews - there are only 368! Plus some
of the many external professional reviews. "Pï" has a high rating
at imdb, 7.5 out of 10. What was it that appealed to you about this
film? - AH
Follow Ups:
to me. The soundtrack certainly didn't hurt either. Got my a keeper copy as soon as it was available.
minutes were brillant.
Then, it started to be confused and boring.
Wonder what the director has made since then....
Below - 2002; Requiem For A Dream: aka Delusion Over Addiction -2000;
Pi-1998; Protozoa-1993. All can be accessed at www.imdb.com. for

that frenetic ugilness appealed to me also, along with many other
elments, Aronoksy's directing style, the stark, high contrast
B&W photography, Sean's performance as Max, the soundtrack, the
suspense, etc. Aronoksy's film in some respects reminded me of
Lynch's "Eraserhead", only with a quicker pace, and with Cronenberg's
"Videodrome"(the hallucinations, especially of the brain). I must
also admit that I'm still digesting his slice of "Pi", it's a big
piece! Max took sumatriptan and dihydroergotamine mesylate for his blinding
headaches and promazine for his severe psychoemotional condition,
possibly paranoid schizophrenia; however, schizophrenics do not
normally hallucinate visually, but rather aurally. The shaking
door hallucination reminded me of the original "The Haunting" where
Claire Bloom is in bed and the large oak door starts doing weird
things! Max had already listed failed treatment: weed, percodan,
violent exercise, steroids, accupuncture, etc. As for the capsules
he periodically swallowed, not sure, surmise probably some kind of
downer, barbituates, etc.
As for the ending, what's your take? - AH

What's with the drill bit(no pun intended), did drilling really
occur? Seems it would not only let out compulsion, obsession, pain,
etc., but brains and blood too! Or did he merely break skin? A hallucinatory
symbolic gesture? A little confusing. - AH
It's a movie . . . sure, he could have traumatized himself into a state of mathematical avoidance. 8^)BTW, I see this as an homage to Lynch. His computer was straight out of Lynch's (eraser)head.

Whether literal or symbolic......the rotating drillbit created a
SPIRAL passageway for the NAME OF GOD, i.e., the first six letters- ELOHIM...................................216.
For ELOHIM.............................216, internally translated
by Max, could never be wholly contained for long in any human's
brain. Must seek self-release(ONE WITH OMNIVERSE).
At the same time, the drilling was Max's way of uttering the NAME
OF GOD, and thus,of achieving inner peace. For all pain, anger,
frustration, obsessive-compulsiveness, guilt-self destructiveness,
and paranoia-alienation trapped within him was swept away in the
tailwind of ELOHIM..........................216. - AH
