that frenetic ugilness appealed to me also, along with many other
elments, Aronoksy's directing style, the stark,high contrast
B&W photography, Sean's performance as Max, the soundtrack, the
suspense, etc. Aronoksy's film in some respects reminded me of
Lynch's "Eraserhead", only with a quicker pace, and with Cronenberg's
"Videodrome"(the hallucinations, especially of the brain). I must
also admit that I'm still digesting his slice of "Pi", it's a big
piece! Max took sumatriptan and dihydroergotamine mesylate for his blinding
headaches and promazine for his severe psychoemotional condition,
possibly paranoid schizophrenia; however, schizophrenics do not
normally hallucinate visually, but rather aurally. The shaking
door hallucination reminded me of the original "The Haunting" where
Claire Bloom is in bed and the large oak door starts doing weird
things! Max had already listed failed treatment: weed, percodan,
violent exercise, steroids, accupuncture,etc. As for the capsules
he periodically swallowed, not sure, surmise probably some kind of
downer, barbituates, etc.
As for the ending, what's your take? - AH

  What's with the drill bit(no pun intended), did drilling really
  occur? Seems it would not only let out compulsion,obsession, pain,
  etc., but brains and blood too! Or did he merely break skin? A hallucinatory
  symbolic gesture? A little confusing. - AH

    It's a movie . . . sure, he could have traumatized himself into a state of mathematical avoidance. 8^)
    BTW, I see this as an homage to Lynch. His computer was straight out of Lynch's (eraser)head.

    by Max, could never be wholly contained for long in any human's
    brain. Must seek self-release(ONE WITH OMNIVERSE).
    At the same time, the drilling was Max's way of uttering the NAME
    OF GOD, and thus,of achieving inner peace. For all pain, anger,
    frustration, obsessive-compulsiveness, guilt-self destructiveness,
    and paranoia-alienation trapped within him was swept away in the
    tailwind of ELOHIM..........................216. - AH
