***The other one I loved for the music and the cinematography: "The Mission"And just which one of several "Mission, The" it is?
Philip Bosco, Aldan Quinn. "Jeremy Irons plays a Spanish Jesuit who goes into the South American wilderness to build a mission in the hope of converting the Indians of the region. Robert De Niro plays a slave hunter who is converted and joins Irons in his mission." --from Martin & Porter's "Video Movie Guide".There is a bizzare scene with the natives singing in the church...one of many excellent scenes that make the movie magic work for me: a visual/audio effect so powerful it has a physical effect on the body, that explains the beauty and horrors of the Europeans arrival in the New World in a way no history book can.
I love an intelligent script, a good story, clever dialog, but that's what a play can do best. Great film gets your eyes wide shut--forcing you to feel the moment.
